In the spring of 1980, I was a young man in Los Angeles trying to decide what direction my life would take. Before I entered the Army, I saw the movie The Big Red One. Like many war movies, it showed courage and sacrifice, but what stood out to me were the men who risked their lives to help others on the battlefield.

The film gave me a glimpse of something bigger than myself—service, duty, and the bond between soldiers. I was especially moved by the role of the combat medic. In the middle of chaos and danger, the medic’s mission was simple: save lives.

That movie planted a seed. A short time later, in May 1980, I joined the United States Army and chose the 91B Combat Medic MOS. I wanted to be the person who could make a difference when someone needed help most.

Looking back more than four decades later, I can still remember sitting in that theater in Los Angeles. I had no idea that a movie would help shape one of the most important decisions of my life, but it did. It inspired me to serve, and I have never forgotten the impact it had on me.
