Every day in the Northwest Hills of Connecticut, The Salvation Army helps bind the wounds of modern-day life, offering food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless, and companionship to the forlorn. As long as people are discouraged, lonely, or needing a helping hand, our “Army of Compassion” continues to have a mission. In response to the need for a centralized social service resource center in Wi

nsted, The Salvation Army has committed to a full-time center staffed with a Regional Volunteer Coordinator/Site Manager. This individual will oversee all Winsted activities as well as towns and villages in the greater Northwest Corner. Our dedicated staff and volunteers will continue to touch lives through selfless acts of service. Our mission could not continue without the support of our communities. Donations support our services; volunteers enable us to do more with less; partnerships allow us to fulfill our mission of serving others.

Another successful Donut Day is in the books, thanks to the generosity of our community partners. A heartfelt thank you to Lyman Orchards for donating 700 fresh donuts, helping us celebrate this cherished Salvation Army tradition in a meaningful way. Salvation Army officers from across Connecticut picked up their donuts this morning and will be sharing them with veterans at VA hospitals throughout the state.

As we celebrate, we also honor the legacy of The Salvation Army's Donut Lassies. During World War I, these courageous women served alongside soldiers near the front lines, providing comfort, encouragement, and of course, fresh donuts. What began as a simple gesture of care more than a century ago has grown into the National Donut Day tradition we continue today.

Today is about more than donuts. It's about remembering those who served, honoring those who continue to serve, and sharing a moment of kindness with our veterans. We're proud to carry on that tradition and grateful to everyone helping make it possible.

Happy National Donut Day! 🍩❤️

Did you know this sweet tradition began with The Salvation Army? During World War I, Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” served donuts to soldiers as a simple reminder of home, comfort, and hope.

Today, we celebrate that legacy of love, service, and joy — one donut at a time
