Winchester Rescue Mission

Winchester Rescue Mission Provides high quality care to individuals devastated by the effects of poverty and homelessness.

The Winchester Rescue Mission strives to end homelessness in the Northern Shenandoah Valley through healing, help, and hope. Our residency program for men and women who are experiencing homelessness provides shelter, clothing, meals, personal case-management, educational and development programs. Our "Cameron Market" (Mon-Fri @ 10AM) provides food to families in our community in a shopping experie

We are able to provide this with the help of 20-30 volunteers a day and the generous financial support of our great community. To find out more how you can donate and volunteer, go to winrescue.org.

Imagine finally landing the perfect job, getting the offer, and then losing the opportunity—all because you can't afford a piece of plastic with your face on it.

For our neighbors experiencing homelessness, the lack of a simple state ID, birth certificate, or driver's license is one of the most agonizing hurdles to securing employment and housing. The DMV and state offices require fees for these critical documents—fees that our residents simply do not have.

The last time we shared this need, this incredible community stepped into the gap. Because of the Visa gift cards you donated, we were able to help several residents secure the exact documents they needed to move their lives forward!

But today, we are hitting that wall again, and we need your help to keep this momentum going.

You might be wondering: Why Visa gift cards? Providing these cards enables us to put the necessary funds directly into a resident's hands in a much safer and more manageable way than cash. The cards are carefully tracked, signed out for specific appointments, and returned by residents so we can steward your generosity well. It provides accountability while empowering our guests to handle their business with dignity.

Will you help a neighbor clear this hurdle? Here is how you can help right now:
1) Purchase a Visa gift card in a denomination of $25 or $50.
2) Place it in an envelope clearly marked for "Resident IDs/Documents."
3) Drop it off at our front desk at 2655 Valley Avenue in the City of Wi******er.
4) Give us a call ahead of time at (540) 667-5379 to let us know you are on your way!

Together, we can ensure that a small filing fee never stands in the way of a transformed life.

[UPDATE: We have the shelves! Thanks to all of you who reached out and offered to meet this need! We no longer need any more shelves or books at this time. But we will let you know in the future as we get the room put together.]

A quiet room and a good book. It sounds simple. But for our neighbors walking through crisis, having a peaceful place to read, study, and process their journey is a vital step toward rebuilding their lives.

Take a look at this room. We are currently transforming it into a dedicated space for case management and a quiet library. Access to books—whether for learning a new skill, preparing for the workforce, or simply finding a mental escape—offers an incredible educational and recreational impact for the men and women in our program.

To make this a reality, we need your help: we need a few bookshelves.

Because we want this room to feel intentional, calming, and dignifying for our clients, we are specifically looking for a donation of matching sets (ideally) of bookshelves in good condition.

Do you have a quality set that needs a new home? Here is how you can help: 1) Snap a few pictures of the shelves. 2) Email them directly to Sam at [email protected]. 3) He will take a look to ensure they are the right fit for the space and coordinate a time to receive them from you!

Thank you for always stepping up to ensure our clients have the resources and the environment they need to succeed.

Over 80%!!!

This week, alarms went off across our building. Coffee was poured, shoes were laced up, and our clients headed out the doors to clock in.

We would love to share photos of them proudly heading off to their shifts, but respect for their privacy will always come first here at WRM. So, we're sharing this graphic instead—because the milestone it represents is absolutely awesome.

Right now, over 80% of the clients in our programs are fully employed.

People often ask us: If someone has a full-time job, why are they still staying at the Rescue Mission?

It’s a fair question. The answer is that landing a job is just the first step. The real change happens in the runway that follows. By remaining in our programs while working, these men and women have the vital opportunity to save their income, pay off old debts, and build a solid financial foundation. That means when they graduate from WRM, they aren't just scraping by—they are set up to truly relaunch their lives.

We are incredibly grateful to our programs team who walk alongside them daily and share in this achievement, and to the community whose support built this facility to make this runway possible.

But today, all the praise belongs to the men and women putting in the hard work. We just provide the roof and the resources. They are the ones overcoming massive barriers, stepping out into the workforce, and doing the heavy lifting to change their futures.

To our clients: we see you, we are incredibly proud of the work you are doing, and Wi******er is a better community because you are in it. Keep building.

A hot meal fills the stomach, but it takes something more to fill the soul. Earlier this week, the atmosphere in our cafeteria shifted. Amidst the usual clatter of dinner plates and evening chatter, our dining hall was transformed into a concert venue.

We had the honor of hosting internationally celebrated violinist and Shenandoah Conservatory faculty member, Dr. Akemi Takayama, alongside Dr. Fritz Polite (SU’s Director of Academic Success and Experiential Learning, and one of our own dedicated WRM Board Members). They brought an incredibly talented group of Shenandoah University students with them, and together, they poured pure joy into our facility.

In the video below, you can hear what our residents, overnight guests, and community neighbors heard. Providing a bed and a meal is critical, but true restoration happens when we care for the whole person. Bringing arts, entertainment, and moments of unburdened joy to our guests is a vital part of partnering with them to rebuild their lives.

Thank you, Dr. Takayama, Dr. Polite, and SU students, for sharing your world-class gifts with our WRM family.

We are so grateful for a community that believes in giving their very best to everyone. When you stand with us, you aren't just keeping the lights on—you're making holistic, life-changing moments like this possible every single day.

We recently shared a joke photo of King Charles visiting us. While intended as a playful nudge to get involved locally, it ended up causing confusion and distracting from our actual work.

[Edit] We always want to be completely transparent rather than just quietly deleting things. We’re always self-evaluating and our focus remains 100% on serving this community!

There is something profoundly healing about planting a seed, tending to it, and watching it grow. For the men and women in our resident program who are working hard to rebuild their lives, getting their hands in the dirt is a powerful, physical reminder that fresh starts and new growth are always possible. 🌱

Last August, an incredible young woman named Hannah Smith built and donated several raised garden beds for her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Because Hannah had the foresight to design them to be mobile, we were able to seamlessly relocate them from Cameron Street to our Valley Avenue facility—and now, we are ready to bring them to life!

Pictured here next to Hannah's beautifully built beds is Lisa, our dedicated Program Manager. Lisa will be working side-by-side with our residents to cultivate and tend to this space. This garden isn't just going to provide fresh, homegrown produce for our community meals—it is going to serve as a vital therapeutic and educational outlet for our residents.

But to get this project off the ground, we need your help.

We are starting from scratch on supplies. We are looking for Lowe’s and Home Depot gift cards so we can purchase vegetable plants, fencing to protect the crops, and the materials needed to make this project thrive.

When you donate a gift card for this garden, you aren't just buying tomato plants or fencing. You are investing in a space of healing, learning, and provision for our neighbors who need it most.

Will you help us plant the seeds of change today?

📍 HOW TO HELP:
Please drop off your Lowe’s or Home Depot gift cards at our front desk at 2655 Valley Avenue.
Note: When you arrive, please include a quick note with the cards stating they are for the "Resident Garden Project." If no one is at the door to let you in right away, simply call the number posted on the glass and we will be right there!

Thank you for always answering the call and believing in the vital, life-saving work happening here at WRM. Let’s get growing! 🌻
