BikeWalk Williamsburg

BikeWalk Williamsburg BikeWalk Williamsburg is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to educate and advocate for the creation of a bike and pedestrian friendly community.

Our Mission:
To foster a bicycling and walking friendly Greater Williamsburg
Through education, communication, advocacy, and encouragement we help build a community where everyone can walk, run, and ride safely. Our focus is on the localities of Williamsburg, James City County, Charles City County, and York County. Through a wide variety of programs - classes, symposia, conferences, events, newsle

tters, websites, and presentations – we educate and advocate for safe places to bike and walk. Our goal is a seamless network of sidewalks, bike paths, and bike lanes that will encourage “everyone to bike or walk everywhere.”

We believe that:

- A bicycle and walking friendly community is one which provides for safe, convenient, and enjoyable active transportation for all ages and abilities.

- Both bicycling and walking are good for our health, our environment, our wallet, and our sense of well-being.

- The quality of life of all citizens is enhanced when no matter where we live, we can choose whether to bike, walk, take public transportation, or drive as we go about daily living. BikeWalk Williamsburg is not a membership organization. We carry out our programs with a dedicated group of volunteers and involved citizens who passionately share our Mission.

Labor Day weekend offered some local (and some not-so-local) bicyclists the opportunity to get together and try something new--bikepacking! The 52-mile, 2-day, overnight camping trip was developed by the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation and some phenomenal volunteers from our very own Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg.

Starting off in Charles City, just past Market 5 at Mile Marker 20, the group rode to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry where they crossed the river to their campsite at Chippokes State Park.

Of course, not without a stop for some fuel at the beloved Spoke + Art Provisions Co.😋

Stay tuned for more group rides and fun events! 🚵🏕

Yesterday, on the front page of our local Daily Press, there was an article about the federal push to remove bike lanes. Millions of grant dollars supporting these efforts have been frozen, and there is no guarantee that those funds will be released.

The League of American Bicyclists published a well-written analysis of the New National Roadway Safety Strategy that was published last month. "...missing without explanation is any strategy for the safety of vulnerable road users -- people who bike and walk, use wheelchairs and scooters, or who otherwise are endangered while navigating roads outside of vehicles."

Safe infrastructure for all is at the core of our mission here at BikeWalk Williamsburg. We are grateful for our community who is supportive of an infrastructure that is inclusive for travelers of all types, not just auto drivers.

What are your thoughts on removing bike lanes from public roadways?

There are so many easy ways to improve biking and walking. Let us finally start climbing up the rankings…

Bentonville, Arkansas, built its reputation as one of America's premier destinations for off-road riding. But in 2026, the city earned something new: a City Ratings score of 50 — the highest in Arkansas and a first-time milestone for the community. It's the result of a decade of work connecting neighborhoods through low-stress bike routes, transforming a world-class trail system into a citywide transportation network. Bentonville's rise from a score of 27 in 2018 to 50 today is a blueprint for what sustained, community-driven investment in biking can accomplish. Read more now at https://bit.ly/4v54p6k
