A new Perspectives column is available: "Reflections of an Activist Professor" by Professor Emeritus David Favre.
I see swirling images, people, places, calls for conferences, calls for writing articles, reminders of meetings, and Zoom screens flickering in and out. Intermingled with these are images of animals abused by humans, of humans destroying habitat, and cattle shuffling through feed lots. Am I in a dream? Slowly the images fade and I realize that I have “rested my eyes” while running though the day’s e-mails. After 44 years in the animal movement, I have met so many amazing individuals, been to so many conferences, meetings, and zoom calls, that the threads of my contacts span the world, and I never know who will make contact up on a given day. So much energy, so much money at work and so much is happening now. It was not like that in the beginning. And I may be overwhelmed with all the activity of today, but I am proud to have been there in the beginning when things were simpler and with a more fundamental question: how do we get started?
