Behind every headline about child exploitation is a future worth protecting.
On October 7, federal authorities announced that a Brockton man had been charged with attempted child s*x trafficking following an undercover investigation connected to Boston-area World Cup enforcement efforts. Prosecutors allege he knowingly attempted to purchase s*xual access to a minor. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
This case brings a national crisis close to home.
According to the CDC, at least 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 20 boys in the United States experience child s*xual abuse. Many never report it, so these estimates likely understate its reach.
Child s*xual abuse includes involving a child in s*xual activity they do not fully understand, cannot give informed consent to, or are not developmentally prepared for. These statistics cover child s*xual abuse broadly, including abuse outside trafficking.
Every number represents a person whose safety, trust, and sense of self matter.
