One participant in our workshop captured the spirit of the day beautifully: “I now feel I am not alone.”

We are deeply grateful to Schechter Boston for hosting, to Gateways: Access to Jewish Education for being our partners for this workshop , and to Esty Gross and Chen Weiss for leading such a meaningful and energizing session. We’re excited by the momentum in Greater Boston and look forward to what comes next as this community continues building more accessible and supportive Hebrew learning for all students.

What does it mean to teach Hebrew after October 7?

Based on a qualitative study by Vardit Ringvald and Sharon Schoenfeld of Hebrew educators across North America published in Education After October 7: Essays about Teaching and Learning the Jewish Diaspora, edited by Matt Reingold, this presentation will examine how Hebrew educators across North America navigated their roles in the wake of crisis. The findings point to a critical shift: Hebrew teachers are no longer seen only as language instructors, but also as cultural mediators and emotional anchors for their students and communities. The research highlights that Hebrew cannot be taught apart from Israeli culture and underscores the need for emotionally responsive pedagogies to shape Hebrew teacher training, professional identity, and pedagogical practice.
