“Sylvester, sometimes known as the Queen of Disco, was famous for an androgynous look and a fierce falsetto voice.” Billy Porter

37 years ago today, Sylvester died from an AIDS-related illness at the age of 41. We honor his life, his music, and his fearless authenticity. In his will, Sylvester left all future royalties to two AIDS charities, ensuring his legacy would continue to support the community long after his passing. ❤️

We are pleased to announce that, starting on January 1st, 2026, One Institute will take over programming and events for STORIES: The AIDS Monument, in partnership with the City of West Hollywood.

Such events and programs will include monthly docent tours starting next year, as well as art installations and special events during Pride, LGBTQ+ History Month, and World AIDS Day. ONE Institute plans to partner with existing HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ organizations on many of these events and programs.

ONE Institute is the nation’s oldest continuously operating LGBTQ+ organization. With ONE Institute’s long history of public programs about LGBTQ+ life and HIV/AIDS history, most recently their exhibition on the history of ACT UP LA during their impressive annual Circa festival, we are confident that they will be ideal stewards for the Monument’s mission to REMEMBER, CELEBRATE & EDUCATE.

As comes to a close, we honor the caregivers whose compassion and strength continue to shape our communities. 🌹

We share the story of Baby Aaron through the words of his caregiver, Raymond Black, whose experience caring for Aaron during the AIDS crisis inspired his lifelong advocacy.

“I met Aaron when he was nine months old and cared for him until he died at the age of 18 months… His memory fueled my activism.” - Raymond Black

To all caregivers, thank you for the love, dignity, and care you bring to others every day. ❤️

The STORIES: The AIDS Monument Grand Opening was a gathering filled with memory, love, and community. Over 450 people came together to celebrate this moment on a rainy day, filling the theater and 2 overflow spaces.

It was powerful, emotional, and deeply meaningful. ❤️

Thank you to all of our speakers, performers, staff, crew, volunteers and everyone who showed up to make this night possible.

We invite you to visit the STORIES: The AIDS Monument in West Hollywood Park and our website, aidsmonument.org to hear the voices and history of the last 44 years.
