Four Bearz recently stopped a fire in its tracks -- saving an entire neighborhood in Nespelem, WA. They had the right tools at the right time thanks to a Community Reinvestment grant through SkillSource and the Washington State Department of Commerce.

Sometimes the return on an investment can take months or years to be earned, but in this case, it was an immediate return that showed up as an entire neighborhood saved. 👏

Did you know? Workforce development is happening every day. It's the coordinated effort that helps people overcome barriers to employment, and connects them to the training they need and to the businesses who need to hire them. SkillSource serves Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Adams, and Okanogan counties with solutions that help businesses build their best teams. And there are 11 other workforce boards in our state who are providing the same connective services to their local communities!

September is Workforce Development Month -- a perfect time to shine a light on the efforts and impact that affect the people and places we love in Washington State. How has workforce development impacted you?

A small business owner needs a skilled employee to do the job. How they find, hire, and train that skilled employee = workforce development.

“Workforce development” might not be a phrase we all use every day, but all of us are affected by it. Washington State has 12 local workforce boards who help local businesses find and train employees with the right skills for the job. For example, Liggins Landscaping & Maintenance in Sequim was able to get the resources and connections to ensure they “can properly train employees, supervise them with the correct tools, and provide consistent work opportunities.” They didn’t do this on their own, but in partnership with the local business services team through their local Olympic Workforce Development Council. Partnership is how it all happens. And it’s happening all across Washington, everyday.

Every three years, state and federal policy require local workforce boards to certify their One Stop Centers to verify that partners are coordinating, customers are being served, and the system is functioning as designed. Last week, certification teams visited WorkSource Okanogan in Omak, WorkSource Central Basin in Moses Lake, and the WorkSource Wenatchee Affiliate to understand how One Stop Center partners -- like SkillSource, Employment Security, OIC of Washington, DSHS, Big Bend Community College, Wenatchee Valley College, and many other essential partners -- are connecting and collaborating to meet the needs of our communities. 🤝

Our responsibility as good citizens and leaders is to make sure that adoption and adaptation is ethical and safe for our workforce and customers.” - Aaron Parrott, SkillSource
