SPARC is excited to announce that we are one of five programs that were awarded a $10,000 grant from the Western Ct Coalition as part of the Juul Settlement Funds with support from CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Over Memorial Day weekend, SPARC funded transportation to and from the junior prom venue. To promote a safe and substance free celebration, students participated in a brief safety check, including a breathalyzer and bag scan before boarding the bus.

As we approach the end of the school year, please join us in supporting safe, substance-free end of year celebrations. Teens may not always follow our words, but they're always watching our actions. By modeling responsible behavior and setting clear expectations, especially around alcohol use, we send a powerful message about their health, safety, and future.

Shepaug high school students had the opportunity to participate in phone-free lunch week, a SPARC initiative to increase personal connections. The Spartan Club helped spearhead this initiative by organizing fun activities such as a DJ dance party, board games, and basketball. Students had the chance to earn prizes for participating. This began in February, but due to weather disruptions, was concluded in April. By the last day of phone-free week, 90 students handed in their phones! Administrators reported lots of talking, face-to-face connections, and joyful noise.

Did you know our brains continue developing into our mid-20s? That’s why delaying substance use—or choosing not to use at all—matters. The choices you make now can impact learning, memory, emotions, motivation, and decision-making for years to come.

This May during National Adolescent Health Month, take a moment to learn how substances affect the developing brain and why protecting your mental and physical health now is so important.
