RFP director Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib argues that for decades, Palestinians have been used as pawns by governments, armed groups and ideological movements pursuing their own agendas.

“Everyone has a use for our cause. Few seem interested in what their projects have actually cost us.
Our leaders helped make this possible. Invariably, they tied our future to outside powers instead of answering to their own people, missing multiple opportunities for statehood and peace, rejecting a series of reasonable offers out of hand. The cost? Generations of loss and suffering.”

Ahmed believes Palestinians have every right to question those choices – and to demand a national project built around freedom, safety and statehood.

I grew up there. I lost 30 family members to Israel’s war. I have every reason to demand accountability - and every reason to challenge people who use our suffering to make arguments that do nothing for our future.

Oppose the merger. Scrutinise the Ellisons. But please stop using the people of Gaza to burnish your social justice credentials. Our suffering deserves attention on its own terms.

Forewarned is forearmed.

In 2006, Hamas promised clean government, better services, and an end to corruption. Many Palestinians believed them because they were desperate for something different.

What followed was two catastrophic decades of Hamas rule: repression, corruption, militarization, fear, unmitigated disaster.

Now, as prospective elections approach once again, Palestinians need to remember how Hamas came through the door last time. It may not return under its own name. It may come through friendly lists and local candidates professing no connection to Hamas.

Gazans know this game. Palestinians in the West Bank need to see it clearly too.

Young Gazan voices like are making it clear: there is no sustainable future for Gaza under the shadow of Hamas’s religious extremism.

While the West treats Hamas as a rational political actor, those like Omer who grew up under their rule know the reality of the terror group’s authoritarianism: a governance model based on ideology that prioritizes martyrdom over life, weaponizes institutions and brutalizes internal dissent.

In order to pave the way for life, development and genuine self-determination, fundamentalist dogma must be removed from schools, governance, and civil society.

Was October 7th an unavoidable outcome of history, or a deliberate political choice?

Framing the massacre as an “inevitability” strips away responsibility from Hamas and ignores the actual options Gaza had - options deliberately stripped away from Gaza by a terrorist group and its choices over the course of two decades.

Rebuilding Gaza demands recognizing that choices matter. A sustainable future for the Palestinian people relies on leaders who choose investment in human capital, institutional stability, and peace over perpetual destruction.

Why is the “two-state solution” no longer talked about?

As Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib explains, the phrase has become politically radioactive.

But stepping back and reframing the narrative allows us to remember what actually matters: the fundamental right of self-determination for both Palestinians and Israelis.

A two-nation solution offers a way to leave behind the toxic baggage of past failures and move forward towards cooperation and coexistence.

It is the most pragmatic way to keep the two-state reality alive.

Inside Gaza, there has been growing local and organic recognition that deradicalization must accompany the transition away from Hamas’s control and governance. An entire generation has been shaped by a value system built through religious instruction, Hamas’s mosque culture, schooling, and a militant lexicon that normalized death, violence, and the devaluation of life. That architecture has to be replaced with a culture that prizes hope, dignity, ambition, and the desire to build and that actively disincentivizes violence, tribalism, religious zealotry, and political extremism. Deradicalization often has negative connotations, and that’s why I frame it instead as transformation: a process of opening horizons, expanding possibilities, and elevating people through meaningful reforms, alterations, modifications, and shifts in mindsets and behaviors.

When every argument is framed as a zero-sum war, conflict becomes perpetual.

Breaking the cycle of incitement, revenge, and violence requires recognizing that there is space for
multiple truths, that their fates are intricately intertwined, and that human life is sacred.

We must detoxify the discourse, step outside rigid binaries, and elevate coexistent solutions. It is the duty of those in the diaspora to wage peace, not division.

In 2015, I launched an initiative to build an internationally monitored airfield in Gaza to give Gazans real freedom of movement.

What I encountered from the “pro-Palestine” movement was deeply shocking:
they would rather keep Gazans trapped in a living nightmare than work with Israeli authorities.

Their ideological purity tests trumped supporting pragmatic solutions that could help Palestinians - because improving life in Gaza would “make Israel look good”.

That was the moment I divorced myself from their performative and utterly unhelpful “activism”.
