This is the terrifying reality of life in the occupied West Bank when soldiers and state actors fail to stop or prevent violent attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians.

Soldiers may appear when cameras are rolling, and may even draw lines in the sand for everyone but the settlers committing violence.

This permissive environment is why this kind of violence continues.

Settler violence in the West Bank is often framed as a series of random, angry outbursts.

In reality it is a calculated effort by settler movements to take more land. The blueprint for this begins with establishing an illegal outpost, initiating a wave of violence, and “squeezing” Palestinian civilians until they are forced to abandon their own land.

This process has been ongoing for decades however, the pace and rate of violence has dramatically increased in recent months.

This man calling in from Gaza, anonymous for his own safety, details a harrowing account of life in Gaza under the iron fist of Hamas’s brutal authoritarianism:

“If you express any point of view that contradicts with their thinking, the easiest thing that they can do is beat you hard to break your legs.”

The caller himself was kidnapped and tortured simply for stumbling across a rare anti-Hamas protest while talking to a friend on the phone. Hamas security forces thought he was filming.

But the abuse and humiliation doesn’t stop there.

After having to flee his home to seek safety in the south, Hamas fighters occupied his empty house without permission - resulting in its complete destruction from Israeli bombardment.

“The problem is that Hamas nowadays still have AK-47s,” explains the caller. “What do you need more than an AK-47 to crack down on people, scare me and scare many other people, and to coerce people into listening to Hamas?”

This is the reality of living in a terrorist-police state.

Step one: the physical expansion of illegal outposts. Next: intimidation and violence. Final step: ideologically justify the erasure of the people who live there.

This is just one micro-example of what has been happening daily in the West Bank.

Hamas officials and fighters are actively weaponizing the distribution of humanitarian aid. With civil order collapsed, men in senior positions are acting with total impunity - desperate women, widows and young girls are being subjected to s*xual extortion, forced into s*x simply for a food parcel, medicine, or 100 shekels.

“Unfortunately, there are many cases - very widespread,” says a reporter from Jusoor News who filmed rare, harrowing testimonies from within Gaza. “In every area, many women are exploited, especially widows and divorced women, because they have no support and no income. Their vulnerability is taken advantage of, and the situation is getting worse day by day.”

Meanwhile, the international NGOs and activists who claim to champion Palestinian human rights remain deafeningly silent. They seem perfectly content to look away while the abusers act with impunity.

For months, Realign For Palestine tried to get mainstream outlets to cover this horrendous story of abuse. Almost everyone refused, until the finally broke the silence.

19-year-old Nasralla was an American citizen. He was shot and killed by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. The men who took his life have faced zero accountability.

Behind the geopolitical debates are grieving mothers who face a reality in which settlers receive protection and operate with impunity and Palestinians are left with no recourse.

Gazan civilians are increasingly directing anger at Hamas-linked systems, ‘approved’ traders, and internal networks that shape access to goods, prices, and aid. Scarcity is no longer seen only as the result of war and border closures, but as something being managed and exploited from within.

Stabilization efforts in Gaza will require fair, transparent, accountable systems that serve Gazans rather than profit off their suffering.

This carousel draws on Realign for Palestine’s partnership with Nisaba Technologies to examine real-time Gazan social media discourse, capturing lived experience and early warning signs often missed in traditional media.

While some insist the total disarmament of Hamas is a strict precondition for rebuilding Gaza, Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute Jaser AbuMousa offers a stark warning: demanding “surrender first, benefits later” will backfire.

AbuMousa points out that stripping away security structures without immediately replacing them creates a dangerous vacuum. If you make daily survival contingent on absolute compliance while leaving people powerless and humiliated, militias won't disappear - they will just fragment, hide their weapons, and rebuild the insurgency underground.

His pragmatic solution: disarmament that must be delivered in parallel with effective governance - it cannot be sequential.

We must build a legitimate, functioning Palestinian governing authority that provides safety and jobs from day one to make armed factions become socially and economically unnecessary.

As global attention remains on the Persian Gulf, a massive diplomatic shift on Gaza’s future has taken place, set forth by Trump’s Board of Peace.

The new framework backed by mediators sets a non-negotiable precondition for Gaza's reconstruction: the total disarmament of Hamas and all armed militias.

Hamas’s immediate response was a public display of armed force. But as Hamza Howidy points out, the organization that launched October 7 no longer exists. With its supply lines strangled and its battalions dismantled, the remaining light weapons Hamas clings to are no longer a strategic military threat to Israel.

They are, however, the only tool Hamas has left to intimidate its own people. Surrendering their guns means surrendering their authoritarian control over two million Palestinians.

This presents a massive reality check for Western commentators. Calling for a Gaza free from military siege is meaningless if it is not also free from the armed militias holding its own citizens hostage.

Gazans are done with Hamas. And yet, no one is really listening to them. Because it doesn’t fit the narrative on either the left or the right. There’s bitter irony here. The people most affected by this conflict are treated as background noise.
