2026 John Edelman Scholar Spotlight! Meet Darrien Hawkins, a U.S. Army veteran and one of this year's John Edelman Scholars.

Darrien is pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical and Counseling Psychology at the University of South Alabama with the goal of becoming a psychologist. Coming from a military family, service has remained a guiding principle throughout Darrien's life. Today, that commitment continues through work as a mental health professional, educator, and mentor, helping others navigate challenges and achieve their goals.

Through the John Edelman Scholarship fund, SVA is proud to support student veterans like Darrien who are helping shape the future of behavioral health.

2026 John Edelman Scholar Spotlight! Meet Alain Monroy, a U.S. Army veteran and one of this year's John Edelman Scholars. Alain is pursuing a Master of Social Work in Clinical Behavioral and Integrative Health at Arizona State University with plans to build a career in military social work.

His goal is deeply personal: to become the clinical social worker he wishes he had during his own military service. Through his work, Alain hopes to support service members before mental health challenges become crises and help foster a culture where seeking support is viewed as a sign of strength.

Through the John Edelman Scholarship fund, SVA is proud to support student veterans like Alain as they prepare to strengthen mental and behavioral health care for veterans, service members, and their families.

These seven exceptional student veterans have been selected to receive a $10,000 scholarship award as they pursue careers dedicated to improving mental and behavioral health outcomes for veterans, service members, and their communities.

Their work spans clinical psychology, social work, mental health counseling, rehabilitation counseling, su***de prevention, traumatic brain injury research, and culturally informed care for military-affiliated populations.
