SVA Student Voices
At 43, going back to school felt like one of the most daunting challenges, even after multiple deployments. Finding SVA changed everything. What started as rebuilding a campus chapter became a new mission, advocating for military-affiliated students and building a career in the space. Today, that work continues through a Veterans Center and supporting fellow student veterans.

Congratulations, Andrew Clayton!

SVA was proud to join the Florida Association of Veterans Education Specialists (FAVES) annual conference this week.

SVA National President and CEO Cory Boatwright addressed School Certifying Officials from across the state, sharing insights from student veteran roundtables and highlighting how SVA is responding through direct engagement and professional development initiatives. He also emphasized the critical role SCOs play in ensuring veterans and military-affiliated students can access the education benefits they have earned.

Following his remarks, Cory moderated a panel featuring student veterans from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of South Florida, and St. Petersburg College. Thank you to Destin Lacquement, Daniel Bruzinski, Jarron Jackson, Jason Balk, Paulo Da Silva, and Phillip Stalvy for sharing your experiences.

SVA team members also contributed to the program. Faisal Sulman, Legal Fellow, presented on the legislative landscape and SVA’s advocacy work, and Jay Alton, Chapter Success Coach, led a session on building and sustaining strong SVA chapters.

SVA is proud to attend FAVES each year to connect with SCOs, share updates, and support the continued success of student veterans nationwide.

We were honored to host the Leadership & Legacy Celebration this week in Washington, D.C., bringing together graduating student veterans from across the country to recognize their leadership, service, and lasting impact.

From meaningful conversations on Capitol Hill to a powerful visit to the Department of State, this experience was about more than recognition. It was about what comes next.

We are especially grateful to https://hubs.li/Q04jpK1g0 / Grow with Google (Bronagh Friel) for their continued investment in student veterans. Through their support of Student Veterans of America, more veterans nationwide are gaining access to career pathways, Google Career Certificates, and AI training that will shape the future of work.

We also thank our partners Hiring Our Heroes (Elizabeth O., Tom Downs, CDR), With honor (Kaylan Swartz), NobleReach Foundation (Arun Gupta, Victoria Virasingh), and SVA Board Member (Brynt Parmeter) for their commitment to student veteran success, and Medal of Honor recipient Ryan Pitts for sharing his leadership and perspective with this exceptional group.

Your legacy continues. Your next chapter begins.

SVA is proud to share that SB 420 / HB 006 has been signed into law in Maryland.

This legislation will help institutions better understand student parents by collecting and reporting key data, an important step toward strengthening support for those balancing school, work, and family.

SVA’s Vice President of Government Affairs, Tammy Barlet, provided testimony on how this bill reflects the realities of today’s students and the importance of building systems that help them succeed.

Every Memorial Day Student Veterans of America attends the wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown in Arlington National Cemetery. On this day of remembrance, SVA invites our student veterans, military-affiliated students, family members, survivors, and allies to attend and participate in the wreath laying. This year, we invited Nikki Gold, SVA’s Student Veteran of the Year, and Leigh Dekorte, a member from our Chapter of the Year, Saddleback Veterans Club. These student leaders represent the impact of veteran-serving policies at the campus and community level, and they value the chance to share their experiences directly with policymakers.

Memorial Day is a time to remember the service members who never came home and the families who carry that loss every day. They are more than names etched in stone or flags placed in perfect rows. They were teammates, friends, brothers, sisters, parents, mentors. They are part of our story.

For many in the student veteran community, this day is not abstract. It is personal. It lives in the memory of those we trained with, served with, and lost far too soon. We carry them with us. In the classroom. In our communities. In the way we continue to show up for one another.

At SVA, honoring their legacy is not only about remembrance. It is about action. It is about building futures, supporting fellow veterans, and living in a way that reflects the responsibility we carry.

Today, take a moment. Visit a memorial. Attend a ceremony. Say their name.

We remember. Always.
