🗃️ More than 97 boxes of History Preserved

Last month, Rural Coalition staff returned to Epes, Alabama, to support our founding member, the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund, in preserving historical records housed at the Federation's Rural Training & Research Center (print shop).

Since August 2025, Rural Coalition and Federation staff have processed archival materials documenting Black landownership, cooperative development, farmer advocacy, and rural leadership.

Why it matters: Every preserved document helps ensure this history remains accessible to future generations.

Our members are our lucky charm. 🍀

🌱Today, we honor Rural Coalition member organization Ujamaa Seeds and the Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA), based in Maryland.

Founded in 2020, UCFA is a cooperative supporting farmers from underserved and historically disadvantaged communities. Through a growing network of regional seed hubs across the continental United States—and expanding into the Caribbean and Africa.

Through Ujamaa Seeds, they provide culturally meaningful heirloom seeds for free distribution within their network and for public purchase—helping sustain their education programs and advance a more resilient food system.

Ujamaa has been a Rural Coalition member for one year. Founder Bonetta Adeeb shared that the organization has directly benefited from Rural Coalition’s advocacy and policy development work supporting farmers and rural communities.

We proudly uplift and celebrate rural tribal leadership — and our own, Marc Grignon. 🌾

On February 9, 2026, Marc was sworn in as a legislator of the Menominee Tribal Legislature (MTL) — his tribe’s governing council.

As one of nine legislators, he will help guide the Menominee Nation forward over the next three years.

Marc ran on a platform focused on:
• Agriculture
• Economic growth
• Relationship building
• Youth leadership

His first official act? Nominating the Tribal Chairman — and the nomination passed.

The Menominee Nation, located in northeastern Wisconsin, has stewarded its ancestral homelands for generations. Mamaceqtaw — “People of the Wild Rice” — reflects a deep connection to land and responsibility to future generations.

From federal termination in 1954 to restored recognition in 1973, the Nation’s history reflects sovereignty, resilience, and organizing.

We’re proud to see rural and tribal leadership grounded in community and land.

Join us in congratulating Marc in the comments 👏🏽
