Education | Homelessness | Healthcare The Distant Relatives Project is a 501 c(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 2017 by William Asiedu. Our mission is based in the commitment to developing underserved communities around the world by creating opportunity and access to resources. This is performed through a series of community outreach and engagement. Our three core pillars include: Education, Homelessness, and Healthcare

🎀 OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH! 💗

Join us for the October edition of Empowering Our Relatives, as we continue our mission of uplifting individuals experiencing homelessness throughout Washington, DC.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of early detection, access to healthcare, education, and supporting those impacted by breast cancer. All people, regardless of their circumstances, deserves access to care, dignity, and a community that stands beside them. 🎀

Together with our incredible volunteers and community partners, we’ll continue providing essential resources, nourishment, wellness support, and meaningful connections to our relatives in need.

MORE THAN A MEAL. 💙

Every month, Empowering Our Relatives brings our community together with one purpose: to make essential resources more accessible to our relatives experiencing homelessness and hardship across Washington, D.C.

Yes, we serve meals—but our work doesn’t stop there.

Through EOR, our relatives can access clothing, toiletries and personal-care essentials, grooming services, health resources, housing and identification assistance, mental-health support, vocational resources and, most importantly, a community committed to treating every person with dignity.

Because empowerment isn’t one service.

It’s meeting people where they are and surrounding them with resources, opportunity and community.

This is Empowering Our Relatives.

Empowering People. Strengthening Communities.

Sometimes empowerment looks like a warm meal. Sometimes it looks like having clean clothes to wear, a conversation with someone who cares, or simply being treated with dignity.

Through Empowering Our Relatives, the Distant Relatives Project works to meet our relatives where they are—providing not only food, but clothing, toiletries and first-aid essentials, grooming services, health screenings, housing and ID assistance, mental-health resources, vocational support and meaningful human connection.

This photo captures what that mission looks like in action: service that goes beyond handing someone an item. It means listening, engaging and making sure people feel seen.

Because our relatives deserve more than temporary relief. They deserve resources, opportunity, dignity and community.

This is more than just a meal.
This is empowerment.

Sometimes caring for our community means making sure the everyday essentials are within reach.

At our Toiletry & First Aid station, Ruth helps provide our relatives with personal-care products, hygiene essentials and basic first-aid supplies—resources that can make an immediate difference in someone’s comfort, health and dignity.

But Ruth’s impact extends beyond what’s on the table.

It’s in the way she welcomes our relatives, listens to what they need and takes the time to connect.

📦💙 INVENTORY DAY IS COMING UP!

Join the Distant Relatives Project on Saturday, October 10 for our monthly Inventory Day as we prepare essential resources for our upcoming Empowering Our Relatives outreach!

Inventory Day is an important part of our mission. Volunteers help us sort donations, organize supplies, take inventory, and prepare the items that will go directly into the hands of individuals and families in need.

Sexual health is essential to overall health—and safe, respectful care should be accessible to everyone, regardless of housing status.

For people experiencing homelessness, barriers such as limited transportation, cost, lack of privacy, stigma, unstable housing, and difficulty accessing consistent healthcare can increase the risk of untreated s*xually transmitted infections and other negative health outcomes.

During National Sexual Health Awareness Month, we’re encouraging our community to:

🩺 Get tested and know your status
🗣️ Have open, honest conversations about s*xual health
🛡️ Practice safer s*x and use preventive resources
💙 Treat every person with dignity, compassion, and respect
