Welcome, Anna! Anna Souhan is a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, currently pursuing a master of Public Health in Environmental Health at Emory University. Anna’s academic and professional interests center on how environmental and occupational exposures impact human health and well-being, as well as how effective knowledge translation and community engagement can improve health outcomes. She currently works for the Sensing Populations to Investigate Rhythms and Light (SPIRAL) lab at Emory, researching how light and heat exposures impact sleep and chronobiology. Additionally, Anna is very passionate about reproductive rights and health, and serves as vice president of Emory’s Reproductive Health Association. Anna is this summer’s Children’s Environmental Health Research Translation (CEHRT) intern, and is excited to work with CEHN’s six CEHRT centers to share news and updates about current pilot projects. In her free time, Anna loves to read, bake, and crochet.

Children cannot vote, but YOU can. We need political leaders at all levels of government who put the health of children, their future, and their families first. Check out the new Voter Guide for Children’s Environmental Health to find out how you can protect kids’ health and their environments in the 2026 elections. Not only is this Week, but today is also ! Children, older adults, and those with chronic illness are especially vulnerable to heat exposure. These tips can help keep children happy, healthy, and cool as a cucumber! ☀️

To protect children from extreme heat:
-Drink plenty of water.
-Stay in the shade or better, an air-conditioned area.
-Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.
-For student-athletes, enforce more breaks in shaded areas.
-Schedule sports practice and other activities earlier or later when it is cooler and in the shade.
-Train coaches and summer camp personnel to be observant of signs of heat-related illnesses.

May is Mental Health Month! It's also a time when many families and communities are preparing for dangerous weather events, from extreme heat and wildfires to floods, hurricanes, and storms.

These events can have a huge impact on children's (and adults') mental health! The Climate Mental Health Network has just released new Extreme Weather Resources (in English and Spanish) that are designed to help adults support young people before, during, and after dangerous weather events.

Welcome, Burnley!

Burnley Truax, MPH is CEHN’s Eco-Healthy Child Care® 2026 Summer Intern. Before joining CEHN, she served as an Environmental Health Fellow at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she worked to advance considerations of Environmental Justice in regulatory risk assessment. Burnley received her MPH from University of Michigan in Environmental Health Sciences. As a graduate student, she conducted epigenetic research on neonatal drug exposure and recruited study participants into a state-wide cancer cohort to understand how cumulative environmental exposures influence risk of developing cancer.

In her career, Burnley aims to minimize harmful exposures for people most at risk. As a
child-caretaker of kids 3 months to 2nd grade, she has experienced firsthand the multitude of exposures that kids experience from indoor air pollution, faulty playground equipment, plastic diaper lining, water quality for formula, and the large amount of plastic, fur, and paint that children are exposed to in their daily environment. Burnley brings scientific expertise, federal policy experience, and a caretaker firsthand perspective to protecting children and workers in childcare settings from environmental hazards.

The CEHN Team is sending wishes for a healthy Mother's Day to you, and to the mother figures in your life!

Mothers are often a child's first environmental health defender- what a pregnant person eats, drinks, breathes, and puts on their skin influences a baby's health, even before conception.

Happy Provider Appreciation Day! 💚

Today we honor the child care providers, early educators, and caregivers who support children’s growth, learning, and well-being every day.

Whether in homes, centers, or classrooms, providers create nurturing spaces where children can thrive — often with little recognition for the essential work they do.

Thank you for caring for children, supporting families, and helping build healthier futures for the next generation.
