Global Network Initiative Protecting and Advancing Freedom of Expression and Privacy in Information and Communications Technolo

All over the world – from the Americas to Europe to the Middle East to Africa and Asia – companies in the Information & Communications Technology (ICT) sector face increasing government pressure to comply with domestic laws and policies in ways that may conflict with the internationally recognized human rights of freedom of expression and privacy. In response, a multi-stakeholder group of companie

s, civil society organizations (including human rights and press freedom groups), investors and academics spent two years negotiating and creating a collaborative approach to protect and advance freedom of expression and privacy in the ICT sector, and have formed an Initiative to take this work forward.

Digitally Right has joined the Global Network Initiative (GNI). Since we started, we have been closely engaged with GNI on various policy and advocacy issues. Now, as a member of its civil society constituency, we hope to contribute further to the ongoing discussions. As an organization, we aim to learn more from GNI about the evolving policy landscape and how to address emerging challenges stemming from technology. We also want to bring ground perspectives from countries like Bangladesh to the table, which we believe can add valuable insights to this multi-stakeholder forum.

GNI condemns the Iranian government’s apparent efforts to stifle , association, and peaceful assembly, including through disruption of information and communication technologies.

This response reflects an unfortunate pattern of authoritarian behavior by authorities in in response to peaceful protests, and it reflects oppression Iranian women have faced for decades. We call on the government to lift restrictions and measures in online and offline spaces.

GNI welcomes NDI as a member of its civil society constituency! “We are happy to join the Global Network Initiative, the leading voice in bringing transparency, accountability and smart decision making across sectors,” said Moira Whelan, Director of Democracy and Technology at the National Democratic Institute. “Democracy requires a free, open internet where all citizens can voice their opinions, share, and debate. NDI’s partners around the world are on the front lines of speaking out against authoritarianism, and through GNI their voices will be heard in C suites and reflected in better approaches to creating an internet that works for everyone.”
