The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is a national alliance of family farm, food, conservation, rural, and urban organizations that advocate for the long-term social, economic, and environmental sustainability of ag & food systems. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is an alliance of grassroots organizations that advocates for federal policy reform to advance th

e sustainability of agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural communities. NSACโ€™s vision of agriculture is one where a safe, nutritious, ample, and affordable food supply is produced by a legion of family farmers who make a decent living pursuing their trade, while protecting the environment, and contributing to the strength and stability of their communities. NSAC member groups advance common positions to support small and mid-size family farms, protect natural resources, promote healthy rural communities, and ensure access to healthy, nutritious foods by everyone. By bringing grassroots perspectives to the table normally dominated by big business, NSAC levels the playing field and gives voice to sustainable and organic farmers. To do this work, NSAC:

gathers input from sustainable and organic farmers and ranchers, and from a diverse group of grassroots farm, food, rural, and conservation organizations that work directly with farmers;

develops policy through participatory issue committees that involve NSAC member organizations and allies;

provides direct representation in Washington, D.C. on behalf of its membership to members of Congress and federal administrative offices, such as USDA and EPA; and

builds the power of the sustainable agriculture movement by strengthening the capacity of its member groups to promote citizen engagement in the policy process.

Two new bipartisan bills, the Strengthening Local Food Security Act and the Local Farmers Feeding Our Communities Act, aim to expand reliable, local food purchasing across the US.

By funding state, Tribal, and local governments to buy directly from small and mid-sized farms, these bills do more than feed communities, they build stronger, more resilient food systems.

๐Ÿ“ˆ $400M in local food purchases โ†’ $747M in economic impact

๐Ÿฅ• If passed, these policies would permanently open doors for local producers and communities alike.

๐Ÿ“ข Nowโ€™s the time to tell Congress: local food matters.

๐ŸŒฟ Creemees, Community, and Coalition: NSACโ€™s Summer Meeting in Stowe, Vermont

Earlier this month, NSAC coalition members gathered in the hills of Stowe, Vermont, home of the Trapp Family Lodge, for our annual summer meeting.

We strategized, built relationships, toured local farms, and recharged for our work ahead. From climate resilience and farmer equity to the power of grassroots policy change, our time together reminded us of what collective action can look like when rooted in local voices and deep care for the land.

Many thanks to NOFA-VT and all our Vermont hosts for grounding our time in history, local knowledge, and of course maple creemees.

The House passed its reconciliation package today. Make no mistake, this bill is terrible not just for our food & agriculture system but for families and communities nationwide. This bill will: take food from hungry families, expand subsidies for a tiny slice of farmers at the expense of everyone else, dramatically increase our national debt -- which triggers additional program cuts in the future, and make it much harder to pass a real farm bill anytime soon.

Did you know that for the last several years, farmers, schools, and food distributors have been working together to serve fresh, local food in schools and food pantries across the nation?

Until a few weeks ago, the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA) and Local Food for Schools Program (LFS) at USDA were doing just that. Both programs were working to build stronger local supply chains and promote market access for smaller scale and historically underserved farmers and ranchers at the same time.

Despite the programsโ€™ wide success with farmers and families, on Friday, March 7, the USDA announced the termination of over $1 billion in previously announced 2025 funding for LFPA and LFS. The loss of these investments will have lasting effects on local food networks. Farmers depend on these contracts, as many of them shifted their businesses to accommodate the new demand, and food banks and local schools will lose out on high quality local produce.

Your members of Congress have the power to create permanent versions of these programs that farmers and communities can depend on through the farm bill, but we need your help to build broad, bipartisan support!

Can you take a moment to email your legislators and ask them to support making LFPA and LFSCC funding permanent through the Farm Bill?

Happy ! What better way to celebrate than by supporting farmers invest in soil health and clean water - ask your Members of Congress to cosponsor the Agriculture Resilience Act (ARA).

In the last few months, weโ€™ve seen brazen attacks on climate and environmental stewardship programs despite their clear benefits for farmers and communities.

The reality is that farmers are not only on the front lines of volatile weather events but also among the most significant stewards of our nationโ€™s water, soil, and air quality. To ensure our ability to grow food into the future, we must resource farmers with the knowledge and support they need to weather any storm. Thatโ€™s why we support the introduction of the Agriculture Resilience Act โ€“ a farmer-centered bill that incentivizes and supports the work family farmers are doing to build soil health, improve water quality, build robust and resilient businesses, and feed our communities.
