In Malawi’s Dzaleka Refugee Camp, a basketball court became a space for connection, opportunity, and hope. 🏀

Working alongside UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and a group of young basketball players known as the "Dream Team," CorpsAfrica Exchange Volunteer Amadou Alpha BA helped bring a community vision to life by creating a space where young people can feel a sense of freedom and normalcy in circumstances where those experiences are often limited. With support from our Program Partners, National Basketball Association (NBA) Africa, OCP Group, and Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) East Africa, this initiative continues to create lasting impact for thousands of youth living in the camp today.

In communities like Dzaleka, where more than 60,000 people live in a camp originally built for just 9,000, opportunities for safe recreation and personal development are often limited. Projects like this remind us that supporting refugee communities is about creating spaces where dignity, belonging, and future opportunity can thrive.

We believe refugees should not only receive support, but should also be empowered to help shape the solutions that impact their communities. That belief is reflected in our growing work in , where 10% of our incoming Volunteer cohort will be made up of refugees.

Locally-led development means ensuring communities are able to build their own futures. 🌍

As we mark the International Volunteer Year 2026, CorpsAfrica/South Africa is celebrating with evidence.

At Pitch Day 2026, Volunteers stood before a room of partners and community leaders and presented something that no policy document produced and no external agenda shaped. Projects that grew entirely from within the communities they served. Ideas that began as real conversations, built on genuine trust, and designed to outlast the service year that made them possible.

It was on that stage, in every pitch, in every community that finally had a platform to show what it had built. This is what a year of service looks like when it belongs to the people it was meant to serve.

Congratulations to every Volunteer who presented at Pitch Day 2026. You stayed long enough to help make it real.

The Close of Service ceremony may mark the end of a Volunteer’s official year, but it does not mark the end of what that year builds. For Claire Mukobwa, returning to CorpsAfrica/Rwanda for a second year became a journey of patience, persistence, and leadership. Her story reminds us that service does not end at COS; it continues in how Volunteers lead, listen, and help communities believe in what they can build.
