🇬🇧 The British Are Coming! 🇬🇧

We’re thrilled to announce “The British Are Coming” as the theme of the 2027 Washington Winter Show and to introduce our 2027 Show Co-Chairs, Val Hawkins and Maria Crosby Pollard.

After all, Britain gave us country houses, garden follies, campaign furniture, and an enduring appreciation for craftsmanship, provenance, and living with beautiful things!

This year’s show will celebrate the extraordinary influence of British culture across art, design, gardens, history, and the decorative arts and the enduring friendship and shared heritage that have shaped cultural life on both sides of the Atlantic for generations.

From Georgian architecture and legendary gardens to antiques, interiors, and contemporary design, we’ll explore the fascinating balance between heritage and innovation that makes British style feel both timeless and oh so remarkably fresh.

Whether you’re an Anglophile, a collector, a design enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates beautiful things, we think you’ll feel right at home.

SAVE THE DATE: January 8-10, 2027!

No taxation, just inspiration!

COLLECTOR’S GUIDE: ASIAN ART, ANTIQUES & ANTIQUITIES

One of the reasons collectors remain so captivated by Asian art and antiques is the extraordinary depth of craftsmanship behind each object. Whether it’s a Chinese porcelain vase, a Japanese lacquer box, a Korean celadon vessel, or a carved jade sculpture, these works were often created by artisans who spent decades mastering a single technique, with skills passed down through generations.

Unlike many Western decorative arts, where the maker’s identity is often celebrated, Asian masterpieces were traditionally valued for the perfection of the object itself. The highest-quality pieces demonstrate remarkable technical precision, from the translucent glaze of fine porcelain to the impossibly delicate carving found in jade, ivory, and wood.

Collectors also pay close attention to materials. In Chinese art, for example, imperial porcelains, nephrite jade, and huanghuali hardwood furniture remain especially sought after because the finest examples were produced in limited quantities and often for royal or aristocratic patrons. Many of these materials are now difficult (or impossible!) to source at the same quality level today.

Another reason designers and collectors love the category so much? Asian works bring an incredible sense of history, texture, and sophistication to interiors! A blue-and-white porcelain jar, a Japanese screen, or a sculptural scholar’s object can add instant depth to a room, creating the layered, collected look that so many designers strive to achieve.

And fun fact: some of the most valuable Asian antiques were never intended to leave their countries of origin. Many entered Western collections through diplomatic exchanges, grand tours, and early twentieth-century collecting booms, which is why provenance and collecting history remain such important factors today!

COLLECTOR’S GUIDE: MID-CENTURY MODERN ✨

One of the reasons collectors remain so drawn to Mid-Century Modern furniture is because truly great examples are unbelievably hard to execute well. The lines are clean, the silhouettes are pared back, and there is nowhere for awkward proportions or mediocre craftsmanship to hide.

Many original pieces were produced in smaller workshops using richly grained teak, rosewood, and walnut, with beautifully engineered joinery and hand-finished details that are increasingly rare today. And fun fact: some of the most iconic Mid-Century designers were actually trained as architects, which is why the furniture often feels so structural and beautifully balanced.

Collectors also tend to pay close attention to the wood itself. Brazilian rosewood, for example, became highly prized in Mid-Century design because of its dramatic grain pattern and rich coloring, but it is now heavily restricted and extraordinarily difficult to source, which makes original vintage examples even more coveted today.

Another reason designers love the category so much? Mid-Century pieces mix extraordinarily well with antiques. A sculptural Italian chair from the 1950s or a sleek Danish credenza can instantly make a traditional room feel fresher, more layered, and far more collected.

We spent this sunny spring Sunday afternoon with the Young Collectors Circle stepping inside a few of Alexandria’s most beautiful and storied homes. We were treated to stories behind each homeowner’s favorite pieces and given an inside look at how they’ve curated and styled their spaces over the years!

We ended the day at for a private Sip & Shop, surrounded by the fabulous pieces in their showroom - many of which found new homes of their own.

Thank you to , , and for organizing such a special afternoon, to the homeowners who so graciously opened their doors, and to Patina for hosting us!

Designer Circle Spotlight: .gregson.interiors ✨

Edith Gregson Interiors was founded by Edith Gregson and Anne Hetz who brought together very different strengths - business discipline and a deep instinct for design - to build a studio rooted in both structure and creativity.

That balance shows up clearly in the work! Their interiors aren’t about chasing trends or creating a moment rather, they’re about understanding how clients actually live and building spaces around that.

There’s also a strong emphasis on collaboration - both with clients and with the craftspeople they’ve worked alongside for years. It’s a big part of why their projects feel cohesive and fully resolved rather than pieced together.

We’re very glad to have that perspective as part of the Washington Winter Show Designer Circle. Swipe to see some of their incredible work!

We asked one of our Washington Winter Show exhibitors: what’s your advice for someone starting a collection?

“Collect what you like. Find something that really strikes your fancy - and even better if it’s something you can learn about or study. You’ll be living with these pieces for a long time, so it has to be something that holds your interest. Where people get into trouble is when they start chasing trends or the market.

A collection doesn’t have to be expensive. Many of my generation started by collecting old glass bottles they dug up in their yards. Buy the best you can afford, but don’t break the bank.

A collection can be as small as a single object or as large as something that needs a museum to hold it. And when I look at a collection, I want to see the personality of the collector - quirks, unexpected pieces, things that might not make sense at first glance, but feel right once you understand the person behind it.”

And all of the treasures you see here are available and ready to add to a collection!
