Investigative Reporting Workshop

Investigative Reporting Workshop Investigative reporting in collaboration with legacy and nonprofit media. IRW’s fellows learn journalism by doing journalism.

The Investigative Reporting Workshop, based at AU’s School of Communication, pairs student journalists with professional reporters on significant investigations. The Workshop is a training ground for a new generation of investigative journalists—we’ve trained more than 250 fellows to date. IRW interns have been part of Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Our investigations examine some of the most import

ant issues our society is grappling with such as racial justice, the environment, health, law enforcement and immigration. IRW collaborates with major national newsrooms as well as focused nonprofits, including a substantial partnership with The Washington Post. Our research at IRW of the last two years grounded a new story published today by The Barbed Wire in Texas. Cara Kelly's story focuses on the 10-year effort in the state to pass a bathroom bill, which restricts the rights of LGBTQ+ residents and carries the highest financial penalties of any bathroom bill in the nation.

In fighting for bathroom bills in Houston, Texas conservatives provided a blueprint for the rest of the country.

Today we’re kicking off our NewsMatch campaign at the Investigative Reporting Workshop!

There’s never been a more critical time to stand up for and protect newsrooms like ours that provide an essential public service.

Through Dec. 31st, NewsMatch will match your new monthly donation up to $1,000. This is a great opportunity to help power our work into 2026.

We're proud to continue our accountability reporting, particularly our work on border enforcement and immigration, the housing crisis and health care.

Will you show your support for our reporting today?

Double Exposure film spotlight: Ask E. Jean, directed by Ivy Meeropol, profiles author and columnist E. Jean Carroll, who sued Donald Trump for defamation and sexual abuse, and won. The film traces her journey and the impact she had as a public figure during and as an inspiration for women to speak up. It explores the fault lines where gender, media and justice meet.

The film will screen on Oct. 31 at the U.S. Naval Heritage Center, followed by an audience talkback with Meeropol.

Get tickets to the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival with the Investigative Reporting Workshop's discount code AUIRW25 for 10% off.

Congratulations to Charles Piller, investigative journalist for Science Magazine, on receiving the 2025 Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting from the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW).

Piller, who has worked with IRW fellows for years, was recognized for his high-impact investigations that revealed the risks of experimental drugs, prompted NIH oversight and raised questions about Alzheimer’s research. Judges praised his persistence, rigor and commitment to accountability in biomedical science.

The Victor Cohn Prize honors exceptional medical science reporting published within the past five years and will be presented on Nov. 9 at ScienceWriters2025 in Chicago.
