Today, we’re excited for Carmen Daugherty to step into the role of Executive Director with a bold vision for building the future, not just in moments of crisis but in the everyday, difficult work of building power.

“This moment demands deep commitment: to our communities, to our history, and to a future beyond this moment. My vision is for Advancement Project to be the place organizers come to build power, test new strategies, and get free.”

“Let’s build the world we’re all dreaming toward, together.”

Catch our team on CBS Pittsburgh discussing the fight with 412 Justice to protect Black students in Pittsburgh Public Schools.

The district’s vote to close twelve schools disproportionately affects Black students who make up 62% of students affected by the closures.

That’s not an accident. It’s the result of decades of under-resourcing schools in Black and Brown neighborhoods while enrollment declines, and using “underutilization” as an excuse to shut them down.

We are not backing down.

We’re challenging the Virginia Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the results of the redistricting referendum in a blatant attempt to overrule the will of Virginia voters.

Yesterday, the Department of Justice launched an unprecedented attack on civil rights in an effort to stifle dissent and silence our communities. We stand in solidarity with Southern Poverty Law Center in the fight against hate, systemic racism, and the violence of white supremacy. We will not be intimidated.

Washington, DC — On Tuesday, U.S. Department of Justice officials announced that a grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, returned an indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to fighting white supremacy and other forms of injustice. At Advancement Project, we work every day to support local movements in achieving policy and organizing wins within their communities and local governments.

But all too often, states are interfering in these hard-won gains to limit our power through a mechanism called abusive preemption.

So what is preemption? And how can we fight back?

Learn more about the people-powered movement for local control and self-determination on our blog.

Every day, we’re witnessing a coordinated assault on our democracy that puts us all at risk. Authoritarianism is rising. But so is our resistance.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, Intermin Executive Director Carmen Daugherty shares her perspective on reimagining and actively shaping the next 250 years of America’s future, rooted in racial justice and a thriving multiracial democracy where everyone is free to exercise power.

We invite you to read along and join us.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, we are told to celebrate a promise: democracy, freedom, and justice for all. But let’s be honest about history. That promise has never been real for all of us. From its founding, this country built its wealth and power on stolen land, enslaved...

ICYMI We filed a lawsuit against Florida to block enforcement of House Bill 991. We stand with communities of color in refusing to accept legislation that dismantles civic participation and strips away hard-won opportunities to build power.

Florida voting rights advocates sue to block a voter suppression bill signed by Gov. DeSantis, HB 991, as President Donald Trump pushes for similar federal legislation.

BREAKING: We're suing Florida to block a new restrictive “show your papers” law requiring documentary proof of citizenship to vote. House Bill 991 is an unlawful attack on the ballot box, one that will hit Black, brown, low-income, and student voters the hardest.

Voting rights advocates filed a federal lawsuit today challenging Florida House Bill 991, a new law requiring documentary proof of citizenship, warning that the measure will disenfranchise eligible voters and create unnecessary barriers to the freedom to vote.
