I had the honor and privilege of interviewing Marco Peronaci, the ambassador of Italy to the United States, when I attended the NELA Gala in Washington, DC 🇮🇹🇺🇸

Italians in the US have a rich history. From being denied work for being Italian to becoming successful community leaders, their fight for justice is definitely something worth talking about as we approach 250 years of American history 🇮🇹❤️🇺🇸

If there’s one thing about Italians, they understand the power of community. And when they came to the US, they leveraged just that 🇮🇹❤️🇺🇸Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America

On Thursday, May 28, the Sons of Italy Foundation hosted its 37th Annual NELA Gala in Washington, D.C., bringing together Italian American leaders, dignitaries, and scholars for an evening of recognition and celebration.

A highlight of the evening was recognizing Umbria as OSDIA's 2026 Region of Celebration. Honorary Chair Stefania Proietti, President of the Region of Umbria, addressed attendees with remarks that spoke to the region's rich history, remarkable landscapes, world-renowned cuisine and wine, and the timeless elegance that defines one of Italy's most beautiful regions.

We are honored to have welcomed President Proietti to Washington, D.C., and look forward to celebrating the Region of Umbria throughout 2026. 🇮🇹

Buona Infiorata! 🌸✨

Today we celebrate the spectacular Infiorate di Spello, one of Umbria’s most beloved traditions.

Each year, the medieval town of Spello is transformed into a living work of art as local residents create magnificent carpets of flowers along its cobblestone streets. Months of planning culminate in a couple days of meticulous work, with thousands of petals and leaves arranged into intricate designs that turn the town into a breathtaking open-air gallery.

Both beautiful and fleeting, the Infiorate is a celebration of creativity, community, and the enduring traditions that make Umbria so special.

On Thursday, May 28, the Sons of Italy Foundation, hosted its 37th Annual NELA Gala in Washington, D.C. — our premier celebration of Italian American leaders, dignitaries, and scholars.

Among the evening's most memorable moments were the remarks of Marco Peronaci, Ambassador of Italy to the United States and Honorary Co-Chair of the Gala. His words were a powerful reminder of what OSDIA and the Sons of Italy Foundation have always stood for: preserving Italian heritage, championing education and philanthropy, and strengthening the bonds between Italy and the United States across generations.

Grazie, Italy in US — we are proud to carry this work forward together. 🇺🇸 🇮🇹

Umbria Spotlight: The Mosaic of Orvieto

Perched dramatically atop a sheer volcanic "tuff" cliff, the ancient city of Orvieto holds one of Italy’s most breathtaking architectural wonders. The Duomo di Orvieto is a masterclass in Gothic design, famous worldwide for its shimmering golden mosaic facade that catches the sunlight in brilliant, celestial hues.

It took over 300 years to fully complete this spectacular cathedral, which stands as a monumental testament to the artistic soul of the Umbrian region. Beyond its stunning exterior, the Duomo was built to house a sacred treasure: the relics of the "Corporal of Bolsena" miracle of 1263, an event that profoundly shaped Catholic tradition.

If you're planning a trip to Italy's "Green Heart," Orvieto is an absolute must-see. Have you ever witnessed this golden masterpiece in person? Let us know! 💚

Today, we stand together with Italians worldwide to celebrate Festa della Repubblica! 🇮🇹✨

On June 2, 1946, following the fall of fascism and the end of World War II, the people of Italy headed to the polls for a historic institutional referendum. They voted to transition from a monarchy to a republic, laying the foundation for the modern, democratic nation we celebrate today.

Today is a profound reminder of the unity, resilience, and democratic spirit of the Italian people. Wherever you are celebrating, let’s wave the Tricolore with pride! Buona Festa della Repubblica!
