Attention Waseca County Lakeshore Owners:

Waseca County Solid Waste and Recycling has designated a disposal area on the west side of their facility specifically for lake shore owners to discard fish remains from the recent natural fish die-off.

Drop-Off Location & Contact Details:
31080 State Highway 13, Waseca, MN 56093 (located roughly 5 miles south of Waseca on the east side of the highway).

Hours of Operation:
Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Waseca Residents Only: The facility strictly accepts waste generated within Waseca County.

We’ve seen and heard a lot of discussion on the recent fish kill in Clear Lake over the last week or two l. We’ve been waiting for the MN DNR results and investigation to be complete. This is what the MN DNR has issued:

“The Minnesota DNR has completed a review of fish samples collected from Clear Lake.

Based on findings to date, the DNR has concluded this was a natural fish kill event, likely caused by a combination of increasing water temperatures with warmer than average temperatures and lower oxygen levels in parts of the lake occurring at the same time fish are experiencing spawning stress in shallow waters. Together, these conditions likely created added stress on fish, making them more susceptible to naturally occurring parasites and infections.

Importantly, the DNR has not found anything suggesting contamination, chemical treatment, or curly-leaf pondweed harvesting activities contributed to the fish kill. Current findings support this being a natural event.

While unfortunate, the DNR shared that fish kills like this are not uncommon and have occurred on Clear Lake in past years.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and encourage relying on verified information as we continue to share updates from the DNR.”

The Waseca Lakes Assoc, the City of Waseca, Waseca County and the MN DNR regularly correspond and are continually working to improve Waseca Area Lakes.
