You know I’m always trying to share resources that can make life a little easier for Rhode Island families.

I’ve been putting together lists of food pantries open on Saturdays, but weekend availability is limited. So today, I put on my detective hat (which is really just me, my phone, and approximately 47 open tabs ) and compiled a list of food pantries open tomorrow, Friday, October 23rd!

I know this list may not be perfect, but I hope it helps families find the support they need. We all know this time of the month can be a challenge when the groceries are running low and payday or benefits still feel like they’re on another planet. Why does the calendar always seem to have more days than the grocery budget?

My goal is to make finding help a little easier by organizing pantries by day and location. Because when you’re already juggling work, kids, bills, and approximately 900 other things, you shouldn’t need a detective’s license to find out where you can get food!

I primarily gather information from the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, along with other resources I’m aware of. Please check the details before heading out, as some pantries have specific service areas, eligibility requirements, and hours.

Anybody else feel like the end of the month is when the fridge starts echoing and you’re combining ingredients that were never meant to meet?

The holidays are coming, bills aren’t paying themselves (ugh!), and making the grocery budget last until next month deserves its own Olympic event. But before you start calling crackers and canned vegetables a charcuterie board, I’ve got something that might help!

I put together a list of Rhode Island food pantries open on Saturdays and Sundays because I know not everyone can get to a pantry during the week. If the grocery budget has officially left the building, take a look!

There are local resources available, and you don’t have to go without food just because it’s the end of the month. Check the hours and eligibility before heading out, and share this with someone who might need it. Because nobody should have to wait until payday to put a decent meal on the table!

And to my trolls: Yes, once again, the graphic is AI. I suck at graphics. The alpacas and the work I do to help people are mine. If you’re going to complain about my efforts to help people survive, you’re going to need some new material. The old routine is getting as stale as the crackers hiding in the back of your cupboard!

It’s official! As part of Noella’s Broke Christmas Series has an in-person crafting event featuring two easy, beginner-friendly projects perfect for Christmas gift-giving.

Project 1: Handmade Pens
Create personalized gumball or beaded pens, perfect for teachers, coworkers, friends, and stocking stuffers.

Project 2: Beaded Bracelets
Design bracelets in a variety of colors and styles, ideal for thoughtful, handmade gifts.

Each participant can make a two items. Additional items will depend on time, supplies, and the number of participants.

All materials and instruction are provided FREE of charge, thanks to a generous donor!

Noella here… Well, the masses have spoken, and apparently we’re adding Christmas crafting to the agenda. Because clearly I don’t have enough to do.

Several people have asked for crafting projects for those who want to make useful handmade gifts for Christmas without spending a small fortune. Naturally, this sounds right up my alley. We’re going to make gifts that look like we put thought and effort into them without requiring a second mortgage. That’s how we do Christmas around here.

A huge thank-you to my wonderful friend Donna, who recently filled my car with craft supplies. Because nothing says friendship quite like enabling my next project!

First up, we have two options:

Project #1: Handmade Pens

These are often called gumball pens or beaded pens. I have a variety of supplies to choose from, and we’ll turn ordinary pens into something a little more interesting. They make practical little gifts for teachers, coworkers, friends, stocking stuffers, or anyone who uses a pen. You know, those mysterious people who still manage to write things down instead of losing everything in their phones.

Project #2: Beaded Bracelets

We’ll use beads to make bracelets in different colors and styles. They’re simple enough for beginners, make thoughtful gifts, and don’t require a degree in jewelry design. If you can string beads, congratulations, you’re qualified.

The pictures are samples of the types of projects we’ll be making. The finished items may look similar, depending on the supplies and designs available. We’re crafting on a budget, not opening a manufacturing plant!

You can make one project or both. The goal is to have some fun, learn something new, and get a head start on Christmas gifts without spending a fortune. Because being generous and being broke are two entirely different hobbies, and I prefer to avoid the second one.

Now, I need your input before I start making reservations.

I’m looking at the first week of November, depending on room availability at the Warwick Library. Our get-together will need to fall between Thursday and Sunday.

What works best for you? Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? And would you prefer a morning, afternoon, or evening session?

I’m planning to reserve the room for approximately one to two hours. I suspect most people will finish their projects in about an hour, but I’d rather allow extra time than have everyone crafting like they’re competing on a game show.

Let me know what works for you in the comments. Once I have an idea of everyone’s availability, I can narrow down the options and check what the library has available.

We’re making useful gifts, keeping costs down, and having a little fun along the way. Because Christmas is expensive enough without paying retail for everything and pretending our bank accounts aren’t crying. Best of all this will be free for all!

This is our adult program for those who do not have children, family, or friends to spend Christmas morning with and would otherwise be alone for the holiday. This program is not need-based and is open statewide.

So here is the update you’ve been waiting for on Coats for Kids!

As many of you know, we are continuing Cynthia Jacob’s legacy and working hard to get the program up and running this year, while also managing our Christmas program.

Please know that we have a limited number of coats available, but we absolutely want to make sure they get where they are needed most. We will be distributing coats to schools with a specific need, as well as providing coats through our Christmas program. (For at least this year)

If you are a school administrator, counselor, social worker, or other school representative who previously worked with Cynthia and your school has a specific need for coats, please reach out to us.

The rest of the information, including how to donate, our Venmo information, and how to donate a new, unused coat, can be found in the attached video.

Please check out the video for all the details. I hope this helps answer some of your questions and gives everyone a better idea of how we will be handling the program this year.

We are doing our best to continue something Cynthia cared so deeply about while also juggling a very busy Christmas season.

The toys are starting to roll in! And yes, I know it’s not even Halloween yet….but ‘tis the season!

We have some incredibly dedicated donors who are always on the lookout for awesome items for our kids, and today we had a surprise delivery on my door step from one of our out-of-state donors!

Retro Max kits, similar to Legos, which is AMAZING because building sets are always one of the things we never seem to have enough of.

These are going to make some kids very, very happy this Christmas.

A huge thank-you to our out-of-state donor for thinking of us and helping us get a jump start on making Christmas magical for our families!

We have had some incredibly generous donors over the years, but recently I received a message asking if I would like 50 pieces of NeeDoh-style toys and dumplings.

Of course I didn’t hesitate to say YES! They are at the top of so many of our wishlists, and these little squishy toys are always incredibly popular with the kids.

The donor has asked to remain anonymous, but I absolutely have to say THANK YOU. This is truly above and beyond, and it means we are going to have a whole lot of very happy kids this Christmas!

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that end up being the biggest hits. And with 50 of these going out, I already know we’re going to have some very excited kids!
