Today at Warwick Rotary, we took a trip back in time with our guest speaker Tony Petrarca, chief meteorologist from WPRI 12, who shared memories and insights from the legendary Blizzard of ’78 — right here in Warwick.
Tony was a student at Winman Junior High when the storm hit, and like so many Rhode Islanders, his life (and routine!) came to a standstill. Warwick was buried under more than two feet of snow, hurricane-force winds created massive drifts, and neighborhoods were completely cut off. Cars were abandoned on highways and schools were closed for weeks, and residents relied on neighbors, snowmobiles, and National Guard support just to get essentials.
Nearly 50 years later, the Blizzard of ’78 still stands as one of the most historic and disruptive storms in Rhode Island history — and a reminder of the resilience, generosity, and community spirit that defines Warwick.
Thank you, Tony, for bringing the storm — and the stories — to life for us today! ❄️💙 Check out the video Tony shared: https://www.wpri.com/video/how-the-blizzard-of-’78-changed-the-way-we-react-to-winter-storms/1822236/
