Education is the first step towards building a kinder, more compassionate community for our pets 🐈‍⬛🐶🐾

We had the joy of hosting our local Brownie troop at our shelter as part of our ongoing community tour program. Together, we talked about what it takes to be a responsible pet owner, explored different reason why animals end up at a shelter, and discussed how we can all play a part in helping them.

The girls got to meet some of our resident cats and dogs, and see what goes on behind the scenes.

It was a pleasure hosting our local Brownies and we appreciate you showering our animals with extra love ❤️

Yesterday, we had the absolute honor of a visit from a very special local celebrity: Smokey! 🐾

Smokey’s story is one of the most heartbreaking cases of animal abuse our team has ever encountered. Earlier this year, he was found intentionally abandoned in a forest preserve, shackled and weighed down with handweights to prevent him from moving, severely chemically burned, and suffering from major blunt-force trauma to his eye.

Thanks to intensive medical care, patience, and boundless love from our dedicated team and our local community, Smokey healed (the trauma to his eye was unfortunately too severe to save) and went to a foster home. Within just one day, his foster parents knew he was right where he belonged and officially adopted him!

Today, Smokey is even CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certified, preparing to bring comfort and joy to seniors, adults, and children. Looking at his joyful, gentle spirit today, you would never guess what he survived. It is a powerful reminder of the incredible resilience of animals and what is possible when the right humans step in with love.

This is the amazing, life-saving work we are only able to accomplish thanks to your donations, your help with fostering, adopting, and your ongoing support. You are the reason we can continue to be here for animals like Smokey when they need us most.

Hi there! I’m Asiago, the General Manager here at NAHS.

Between managing the shelter, keeping everyone’s spirits high with my top-tier sense of humor, and supervising staff breaks for belly rubs, I keep a pretty busy schedule! But my absolute favorite part of the job? Spreading joy, friendship, and unconditional love to every single human who walks through the door.

I’m just one year old, which means I’m at peak adventure age! I am actively searching for my very own furrever family to share life’s journey with. Whether it’s exploring new hiking trails, chasing the autumn leaves, or just investigating every interesting scent in the neighborhood, I’m ready to experience all the excitement the world has to offer right by your side.

Also, you want to know my favorite thing in the whole wide world? Other canines! I am a certified social butterfly. I live for playgroups, games, and polite sniffs. If you already have a playful doggo at home, or if you’re willing to set up lots of doggie playdates, we are going to be absolute best friends. I’m also wonderful with kids! I just want to lick their faces all day.

I would love to get adopted soon and step down from my general manager role here at NAHS and into the role of spoiled pup. Who knew hoomans were so much work!

We have received an overwhelming and wonderful response regarding the kittens we rescued last week! Thank you all for your incredible support and donations.

Here are a few updates on their status:

Half of the kittens are currently thriving in foster care with our dedicated foster team. This temporary placement has allowed us to open up critical space to help more animals in need. Once they reach the appropriate age for spay and neuter procedures, they will return to our facility and become officially available for adoption (approximately 2-3 weeks)

Meanwhile, the remaining kittens continue to receive attentive care from our staff and volunteers, as well as preparing for their upcoming spay and neuter procedures. They will also be available in 2-3 weeks.

How to Stay Updated and Get Involved;

Our website is updated daily, and once any of the kittens are fully cleared and ready for adoption, their profiles will be posted there. While we are unable to place holds on specific animals, joining our foster program is a wonderful way to care for these kittens firsthand. Foster applications are available on our website at:

If fostering isn’t the right fit at this time, we always welcome volunteers! It is a fantastic way to spend quality time with the animals and support our mission.

Earlier this week, we rescued 42 new kitties all at once, and our community stepped in. From local drop-offs of food and litter, like the amazing 50 lb donation from the lovely community members in our first photo, to packages arriving all the way from Pennsylvania, the outpouring of love has been incredible. We have had countless guests stop in from all over to drop off urgently needed supplies, giving us the exact resources we need to nurture these kittens.
