Earlier this year, TREE Fund launched the Arboretum Research Partner Directory in conjunction with ArbNet, which accredits arboreta all around the world. Over 120 arboretums and gardens have added their information to the list already, with the intent to grow the research taking place at their locations.

During a presentation the other week at the 2026 ISA Annual Conference in Detroit, TREE Fund announced the 2026 recipient of its Ken Ottman Volunteer Award, Randall Miller, BCMA.

Since 2007, TREE Fund has given the Ken Ottman Volunteer Award to an individual whose contributions to TREE Fund are exemplary. It is the highest and only award TREE Fund gives out annually. What made it extra special this year was the fact that Randy was sitting next to Ken at the time the award was announced.

Randy has held many different volunteer positions on TREE Fund committees, including serving on the Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2021. He also served as the Chair of the Liaison Committee, while the Liaison for the Utah Chapter of the ISA, from 2018 to 2021, served on the Grant and Scholarship Review Committee, and has participated in the Tour des Trees 13 times.

Our Virtual Tour des Trees participants are halfway though their fitness journeys for this month and going strong. Keep an eye out for an update on their journeys soon.

This week's theme for the Virtual Tour des Trees is education. TREE Fund offers two education grants, which are available to three organizations each year ($5000 grants each) and offers six different student scholarship programs, which offer $5000 scholarships to up to ten students each year.

Education is a big part of what we do at TREE Fund, not just through these programs which help to grow the knowledge of the general public (grants) and the future of the industry (scholarships), but also through our free Webinar Series, which attracts viewers from around the world and is one of the largest webinars as far as attendance in the industry. The Safe Arborist Techniques Fund is a joint program of TREE Fund and International Society of Arboriculture, established in 2015 to support research and development into the techniques and equipment that arborists use in climbing, rigging, and working on trees, and the means of identifying potential hazards, to provide a safer working environment.

The maximum award value of SATF grants is $15,000.

John Z. Duling and Evelyn Duling of Indiana, strong advocates of research, in 1972 proposed the establishment of the ISA Research Trust. The goal of the John Z. Duling Grant and Evelyn Duling Endowment Fund Grant Program is to provide start-up or seed funding to support innovative research and technology transfer projects that have the potential of benefiting the everyday work of arborists.

Maximum grant award of $15,000.
