While discussing workplace violence prevention strategies, Fairbanks said it’s essential to consistently communicate zero tolerance of workplace violence to patients and staff. She also emphasized the importance of supporting victims and collaborating with local law enforcement and the local State’s Attorney if charges are pursued.

Christine Quinlan, Vice President of Nursing/CNO, Ascension Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital, took part in a Q&A session on Illinois-specific workforce issues during IHA’s healthcare workforce forum on Thursday.

She noted that partnership between the nursing team and security is key while discussing workplace violence prevention strategies. Quinlan also shared that security officers round with the care team and security camera footage is reviewed regularly. Scott Grandt, Regional Public Safety Director, Loyola Medicine, offered insight into Illinois-specific workforce issues during IHA’s healthcare workforce forum on Thursday. He described the health system’s ongoing education including in-service training for security officers and workplace violence training for staff.

“If someone experiences workplace violence, we reach out, offer support and encourage them to tell their story. If you were battered, we want to file a complaint. We want to make sure legislators understand how much it’s happening.”

Matt Neel, Medical Solutions' Vice President of Allied Health, presented “Beyond Nursing: Why Allied Staffing is Now an Operational Imperative” during IHA’s healthcare workforce forum on Thursday.

He pointed to the need for physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapists, along with medical and radiologic technologists. Among U.S. hospitals, the average turnover rate is 18.5% for allied health, he said, noting that “what the allied vacancy stops is the problem,” from patient diagnosis and treatment to recovery and discharge. Neel encouraged leaders to examine how allied vacancies impact throughput, why allied roles are not interchangeable and friction in the hiring process.
