A simulated visit to the dentist at Comprehensive Learning Center can be a big step toward receiving the care a student needs and deserves. At CLC, we teach skills that support each student’s quality of life, including access to essential health care.
Getting there takes thoughtful teaching, individualized materials, and plenty of practice. For a student preparing for a dental visit, we might create a picture schedule showing each step, from sitting in the chair to opening their mouth, while simulated dental tools help make the experience familiar.
Materials are created around each student’s current abilities and the support they need to learn new skills. Even when students are working toward the same goal, their materials and teaching approach can look very different.
If a student struggles, we may break a step down further, change the visuals, or teach it differently. As skills develop, we can combine steps or gradually remove picture cues to encourage independence. Ongoing data collection and analysis guide these decisions, helping us recognize what is working and what needs adjusting so we make the most of valuable teaching time.
We also work closely with families to transfer these skills to actual appointments, gradually reducing CLC staff support as students become ready. The goal is for students to attend with their family without needing our staff’s assistance.
Each step brings us closer to something meaningful: greater comfort, more independence, and better access to care.
