Wa-Hi Students Qualify for National High School Finals Rodeo
Walla Walla High School juniors Ashley Lane and Jaxon Gartner have earned spots on the Washington State National High School Rodeo Team following standout performances at the state finals rodeo competition.
Lane captured reserve champion honors in pole bending, while Gartner earned reserve champion honors in steer wrestling. The two students will travel with their Washington teammates to Lincoln, Nebraska, July 19–25 to compete in the 78th Annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR).
The NHSFR is recognized as the world’s largest rodeo, featuring more than 1,800 contestants from 44 states, five Canadian provinces, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand and Guatemala.
Competitors at the national finals will contend for more than $150,000 in prizes, more than $200,000 in added money and over $375,000 in college scholarships. Contestants also have the opportunity to earn the title of NHSFR World Champion.
To advance to the championship round, contestants must finish among the top 20 competitors based on their combined times or scores from the first two rounds of competition. World champions are then determined by combined performances across all three rounds.
The Saturday championship performance will once again be televised nationally as part of the Cinch High School Rodeo Tour telecast series. Live broadcasts of each NHSFR performance will also stream online at The Cowboy Channel.
Competition begins July 19 at 7 p.m. and continues daily at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. through July 25.
Walla Walla Public Schools congratulates Ashley Lane and Jaxon Gartner on this outstanding achievement and wishes them success at the national finals.
