U.N. experts received information alleging “ongoing and widespread” threats, harassment, and intimidation against Starbucks workers, a March 10th letter recently made public states.

Since 2021, Starbucks baristas have spoken up and documented instances of misconduct and unfair treatment from the company, especially during workers’ fight for improved conditions in a finalized union contract. Notably, police have been called on baristas who have engaged in peaceful and protected activities, such as picketing and leafleting.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has called on Starbucks and the U.S. government to respond to these allegations. As it stands, Starbucks is the largest violator of labor law in modern U.S. history, and over 10,000 baristas have organized unions in 100s of stores to fight for better pay, hours, protections, accessible benefits, and more. The U.N. says the company may be violating the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and other international law protections.

Union Starbucks workers are continuing to ask customers to support them by not buying Starbucks products until the company finalizes fair union contracts.

Today in Labor History May 16, 2007: Long before the current wave of union organizing at Starbucks, Baristas at the Starbucks in East Grand Rapids announced their membership in the IWW Starbucks Workers Union. Starbucks was and is notorious for their poor treatment of workers. The NLRB slapped them with numerous anti-labor violations and forced them to settle the Grand Rapids dispute in October. In 2024, the Supreme Court heard the case of seven union workers from a Memphis, Tennessee Starbucks who were fired in retaliation for joining the union, in violation of National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) rules.
