September 30th, 2019, WWSO lost one of the finest humans to ever wear a badge, Retired Chief Deputy John King. John came to us in March of 2013 when he was appointed as the Chief Criminal Deputy by Sheriff Turner. After a few years as the Chief of Operations, John retired but stayed on with Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office as a Reserve Deputy. John again came back on as the interim Chief Deputy in 2018 before going back to his Reserve status where he remained until his passing.

Prior to his time with us in Walla Walla, John was a police officer in California. In May of 1979, John started his law enforcement journey, at the age of 20, with Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. In November of 1979 John went to work at Fullerton Police Department. In July of 1987 John started with the Drug Enforcement Agency. Then in February of 1989, John began his career at the Los Angeles Police Department where he retired in 2013 as a Lieutenant.

It is safe to say, the history above barely covers the tremendous sacrifice John, and his family selflessly gave during his 41 years of service. John was also an instructor, in his spare time, for FBI-LEEDA, not a position easily acquired. The cadre on hand with that organization boasts a resume to rival anyone in leadership, John included!

Anyone who knew John was drawn to him; it was unavoidable. His vast knowledge and insight into all things were astounding; he could have written a best seller. John took pride in his family, often bragging about them, and was an avid outdoorsman and well known at the YMCA. John will probably be most fondly remembered by members of WWSO as being a cop’s cop with a sense of humor that could draw a crowd. John was fair and honest, and you always knew where you stood with him. He truly was someone to idolize.

In his memory, WWSO is continuing our fundraising efforts this year to donate money in John’s name to Providence Saint Mary Cancer Center! If you see a deputy with a beard in December, you will know John has a special place in their heart and they have also personally donated and proudly wear a beard in his honor!
