Independence Day Fireworks Will Not Be Rescheduled This Summer
On July 4, the Town of Wakefield hosted a full day of activities, from morning events, to the afternoon parade, to the evening concert. Due to a late rainfall, it was determined that the fireworks scheduled for the evening could not be deployed safely, and the show, organized by the West Side Social Club (WSSC), was cancelled.
The Town incurs significant public safety and public works costs to provide a safe environment for our Independence Day activities. Those costs were incurred despite the fireworks cancellation. After several weeks of consideration, the Town has determined it does not have the necessary resources to safely and effectively host an additional large-scale event for a rescheduled fireworks display this year.
We recognize that the fireworks are a beloved Wakefield tradition and bring our community together, and we look forward to partnering with the WSSC again next year. We thank the WSSC and the Wakefield Independence Day Parade for their efforts planning the day’s events, and are grateful for the volunteers and Town employees who contributed to a memorable Independence Day celebration.
