Waconia Lions Club The purpose of this page is to provide insight and information regarding how the Waconia Lions Club serves our community and region.

Lions International

The International Association of Lions Clubs began as the dream of Chicago insurance man Melvin Jones, who wondered why local business clubs (he was an active member of one) could not expand their horizons from purely business concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large. This idea struck a chord within his own business group (The Business Circle of C

hicago) and they authorized him to explore his concept with similar organizations from around the United States. His efforts resulted in an organizational meeting at a local hotel on June 7, 1917. In 1925, Helen Keller attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness". The Lions accepted her challenge and our work ever since has included sight programs aimed at preventing blindness. Waconia Lions Club - Founded In 1945

A similar group of community minded men had long recognized the need for a civic organization to promote and improve our city and foster the well-being of its citizens. Commercial clubs had been started a number of times but had met with little success. However, in July of 1945 a representative from Lions International met with a group of interested men in the City Hall. These men then approved and proceeded with organizing a Lions Club in Waconia. Temporary officers were elected and the first official meeting for the club was held on August 2nd, 1945. It has been the premier service organization in Waconia ever since. For over 70 years, and now with over 85 members, the Lions have worked hard for the betterment of the community, the region, and the world.
