October is Ultrasound Awareness Month! 🤍

There’s something so special about seeing your little one on an ultrasound for the first time. Those tiny movements, the sound of a heartbeat, and the excitement of watching your baby grow are moments that many families hold close to their hearts.
But beyond these precious memories, ultrasounds play an essential role in prenatal care. They allow healthcare providers to monitor your baby’s growth and development, assess important aspects of your pregnancy, and identify potential concerns that may need additional attention.

At the AFE Foundation, we believe that every mother deserves to feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout her pregnancy. While amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare and unpredictable complication that cannot currently be predicted or prevented through ultrasound screenings, access to quality prenatal care and open communication with healthcare providers remain incredibly important.

This month, we encourage expecting mothers to prioritize their recommended ultrasounds, attend routine prenatal appointments, and never hesitate to ask questions or voice concerns.
Because behind every ultrasound is a mother, a baby, a family, and a story worth caring for.

Miranda Klassen, Founder and Executive Director of the AFE Foundation, joined Stephanie Martin, DO, of Clinical Concepts in Obstetrics, to present an in-depth 2.5-hour educational session on amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) at the Society of OB/GYN Hospitalists meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

Together, they discussed AFE pathophysiology, recognition and diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and resuscitation, and important updates in AFE research, bringing together the perspectives of patient advocacy, research, and frontline clinical care.

What is an OB hospitalist?
OB hospitalists, also known as laborists, are obstetric clinicians who are based in the hospital and provide immediate care for pregnant and postpartum patients. They evaluate obstetric emergencies, manage labor and delivery, perform urgent deliveries and procedures, support community obstetric providers, and often play a critical role in rapid-response situations when every minute matters.

This past Saturday, October 3rd, AFE Foundation Executive Director Miranda Klassen had the opportunity to present on amniotic fluid embolism at the inaugural AWHONN District 1 event in Boise, Idaho.

This first-of-its-kind gathering brought together more than 200 nurses from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana for a day of advanced maternal health education.

The impressive program featured in-depth presentations on three critical obstetric emergencies: postpartum hemorrhage, maternal cardiac arrest, and amniotic fluid embolism.

For AFE, education matters. Recognition, rapid response, coordinated teamwork, and preparedness can make a profound difference when every second counts. We are grateful to AWHONN District 1 for creating space for nurses across the region to come together, strengthen their skills, and advance safer maternal care.

When you submit an AFE case, you’re contributing to a deeper understanding of this rare condition, helping researchers evaluate treatments, study long-term outcomes, and improve care for future families.

This growing registry has already led to 13+ clinical publications, advancing knowledge around diagnosis, recurrence, and patient outcomes.

Clinicians can begin by submitting a report with no patient-identifying information required. Full case submissions will follow with proper consent, and our research team will guide you every step of the way.
