❤️ Carmelo Update ❤️

Our precious boy was supposed to come home today, but his veterinarian at UC Davis called this morning to let us know he experienced some pain while urinating last night. They believe he is still very sore from surgery and needs more time to heal.

As much as we want him home, we want him comfortable. We asked that he stay so they can continue managing his pain with the appropriate medications until he feels well enough to come home. ❤️

We miss our sweet boy so much, but we know he is where he needs to be right now. Please continue keeping Carmelo in your thoughts and prayers as he heals. Thank you for loving him and supporting his recovery. 🙏🏻❤️

Oliver loves getting his back scratched in that spot he just can’t reach! When you find it, out comes his tongue! 😂 It’s his version of a dog kicking their leg when you scratch just the right place.

Busy morning at the sanctuary! 🐮❤️ All 11 of our cows had their hooves trimmed, received their vaccinations, and were dewormed today.

Preventive healthcare is such an important part of giving our cattle long, comfortable lives. Healthy hooves help them walk, graze, and rest comfortably. Overgrown or uneven hooves can cause pain and put extra strain on their joints. Vaccinations help protect against serious diseases, while managing parasites supports their overall health.

Most of our cows have their hooves trimmed once a year, while a few need that extra care twice a year. Giving them a safe home is only part of our promise—we’re committed to providing the ongoing care they need, too. ❤️

If you’re able to donate even $5 or $10 toward their hoof care, we would appreciate it so much. Today’s bill was $1,300. Every donation adds up and helps us keep our cows healthy and comfortable.

Today I watched our four Sebastopol geese playing joyfully in the pond without a care in the world. Diving, splashing, and having the best time—I have never seen them have so much fun! It was such a beautiful sight. ❤️🪿

These four beautiful geese were confiscated as part of a cruelty case. We initially fostered them and were so grateful when we were able to make them permanent members of the Funky Family.

We always wanted to help geese, but we didn’t have a setup that could give them the space and water they needed… until we built the pond.

To everyone who purchased a brick or donated to this amazing project: thank you. You helped create a place where our ducks and geese can feel safe, splash, dive, and simply enjoy being themselves.

Watching their happiness today, I wished you could all be there to see what your kindness made possible. ❤️🐓

Sisters who dust bathe together stay together! ❤️🐓

These three sweet ladies—Lacey, Buttercup, and Olivia—came to us almost a year ago. They have always been the best of friends and still stick together, even when it’s time for a dust bath!

Chickens form bonds, build friendships, and create families. These girls may not look alike, but they are sisters at heart—and most definitely family. ❤️

We have great news to share about our sweet Carmelo! ❤️

Carmelo is still at UC Davis being treated for urinary stones after two surgeries. Yesterday, his veterinary team shut off his catheter to see if he could urinate on his own—and he did! 🎉🎉

Today’s update brought more good news: he continues to urinate normally! Tomorrow, they will take X-rays to see whether the remaining stones have cleared his urethra. 🙏🏻

Thank you all for your good thoughts, prayers, and love for our sweet boy. We are so thankful for this progress and hopeful that he can come home toward the end of the week. His sisters—and all of us—are missing him so much! ❤️

Please welcome Penny to the Funky Family! ❤️🐓

Penny is 13 years old and was the last hen in her flock. Her family wanted her to have chicken friends again, so they made the decision to rehome her. They were also dealing with a rat problem and hoped removing the chicken feed would help.

Penny is sweet, quiet, and absolutely gorgeous. She’ll be joining some other older ladies in our chicken yard, where she can enjoy companionship and plenty of love. She is absolutely precious, and we are so grateful to have her as part of our family. ❤️
