Drawing and painting from plaster casts is a fundamental part of the curriculum at Stabat Mater Studio. This is a centuries-old practice and provides students the opportunity to replicate the effect of light and shadow in a very controlled environment. Additionally, many plaster casts are replicas from Classical sculptures, so the aesthetic and design choices of the original sculptor can be studied.

The study of artistic anatomy is an important element of Classical art. Understanding the human proportions in a conceptual way supports the artist’s observations and is crucial for constructing a believable figure. At the same time, idealizing the figure is also discussed at Stabat Mater Studio, especially in the case of sacred art.

A few summer projects by Stabat Mater artists! In between painting commissions and completing liturgical projects, our artists enjoy exploring themes and working out visual problems using small drawing and painting studies. Staying engaged with the technical aspects of your craft is just as important as developing an understanding of what it means to be a Catholic artist.

Part of Stabat Mater’s apostolate is to beautify churches through liturgical design and custom stenciling. This month, our team worked on the new church for St. Joseph the Worker parish right here in Tyler, TX. Custom stencils were applied to the reredos, sanctuary walls, and niches on either side of the sanctuary. Gold lettering from the Introit antiphon for the Feast of St. Joseph wraps around the walls of the sanctuary:

Justus ut palma florébit: sicut cedrus Líbani multiplicábitur: plantátus in domo Dómini: in átriis domus Dei nostri. (Ps 91:2)

The just shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow up like the cedar of Libanus: planted in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.

“Sight size” is a method in which the drawing is set up the exact same size (visually) as the subject. This allows for very accurate proportions and easy comparison of the drawing with the subject. First-year students Juliette H | Catholic Artist and Amelia Coleman were working on these two charcoal drawings in sight size earlier this year.
