The hard truth from researchers: Loneliness doesn't just feel bad.

It's measurably linked to a higher risk of an earlier death — comparable to risks we take much more seriously, like inactivity and smoking 🚬

Researchers who've pooled data from millions of individuals have found that people who are chronically lonely face a significantly higher mortality risk than people with strong social ties.

The take-home message: Staying connected isn't a side quest. It's a healthy behavior.

Even though it takes a lot of brain power to strategize, advocate, organize and carry out our mission - it all starts with the heart. The very same connections we foster in the community, we cultivate from within.

Can loneliness actually affect your memory? Research increasingly says YES.

Multiple long-term studies have found that people who report chronic loneliness face a higher risk of developing dementia over time. This is according to a major 2022 study published in Neurology and a large 2024 meta-analysis covering over 600,000 people.

The exact biology is still being studied, but the pattern is clear: staying socially and mentally engaged appears to be protective for the brain, not just the mood.

We aren’t medical experts, but we DO read the scientific research. Studies like these continue to inform how we support older adults through the transitions of aging. When you see a social event on our calendar, know that showing up is more than just small talk. ➡️

What says summer fun better than spending an evening at the pool with friends? 🛟

Join Methow At Home for a relaxed Summer Pool Social during adult swim at Wagner Memorial Pool in Twisp. Relax poolside or bring your swimsuit and hop in! There will be plenty of time to visit with friends and enjoy a beautiful summer evening together. Whether you swim or lounge in a chair, everyone is welcome!

Methow At Home is part of a larger network of organizations all across the country that serve older adults. Now you can connect with other LGBTQ+ older adults that are part of these communities through an online peer space. Gatherings are hosted every month, so even if you can’t join this one you might be able to connect at future meetings.
