The Mary Kiesau Community Fellowship

The Mary Kiesau Community Fellowship The Fund is held at the Community Foundation of North Central Washington and will be guided by Mary’s partner Merle Kirkley and her mother, Carolyn Townsend.

The Mary Kiesau Fellowship Fund will support the independent projects of artists, photographers, and naturalists working to further their own creativity, professional development, and the community’s connection to the land, art, and each other. Artists, photographers, and naturalists will have an opportunity to apply for the Fellowship, which will provide funds to support their “field” work and ul

timately the creation of artistic works and knowledge that can be shared with the community. Mary Kiesau was a woman of extraordinary energy and drive. This fellowship honors her legacy through celebrating Mary’s educational and artistic passions:

• living in harmony and balance with the earth and its finite resources
• being observant, interested in, and connected with the natural world in order to gain a deep appreciation for the place one calls home
• helping to create a strong, resilient, and enlightened community that is composed of the Methow flora, fauna, and people. The Fund emerged from a series of conversations with Mary’s close friends, family, and those who worked and served with her at TwispWorks and the Methow Conservancy. To honor Mary’s legacy and support the Mary Kiesau Community Fellowship Fund, please donate online or send your check, payable to the Mary Kiesau Community Fellowship Fund to CFNCW, 9 South Wenatchee Avenue, Wenatchee, WA 98801. Thank you!

Thank you Joanna Bastian for sharing your story of releasing Mary's stardust:

I climbed up onto a plateau overlooking the Methow River yesterday evening. The meadowlarks were in full song as the setting sun illuminated the hills across the river. Rocky cliffs, aspens tucked into ravines, and golden arrowleaf balsamroot lit warmly with the last rays of day.

I knelt amongst the larkspur to find a good angle to photograph, and I think Mary would be amused to know that my dog Luna romped nearby.

I poured the content of the paper envelope into my palm, enclosing my fingers over the seeds and ashes. I gave gratitude for having the pleasure of knowing Mary, for everything she had taught me, and everything I would continue to learn as her words would inevitably walk into my heart in future moments. She planted seeds in hearts, how fitting she will continue to plant seeds with her physical remains. Thank you for this gracious gift, for sharing Mary both in life, and in this next phase of existence. Blessing to you.
