This month’s “Villager Spotlight” features Hattie! Hattie was born in Anniston and grew up with her grandmother in Greensboro and Akron, Alabama, later attending Stillman College. She came to Home in Place (HIP) after a social worker with the fire department recommended the program following some falls at home.

Since joining, Hattie calls HIP one of the best things that's ever happened to her, from rides to the doctor, to getting to plays she'd otherwise miss. One time, HIP even picked her up outside normal operating hours to make sure she got home safely after a procedure.

Beyond the practical help, she's built real friendships with the volunteers she rides with and always makes a point to strike up conversation. "I'd feel comfortable going to my fellow HIP Volunteers if I had an emergency," she said.

Her advice for anyone considering joining? Simply: "Join!" And she hopes more people come to see programs like HIP as essential, because she believes older adults need more resources like HIP to stay social and get where they need to go.
