Spotlight: Dr. Karen Johnson, Assistant Professor

One piece of advice I would give to students as they enter the field of Social Work is to prioritize building meaningful relationships with the individuals and communities they serve. In my practice and research experience which spans over two decades, I have found that genuine connections are the cornerstone of effective social work practice. Whether working with populations that have been adversely impacted by racial and/or other system inequities, those facing trauma, or communities navigating complex challenges, investing time and effort in fostering trust and rapport lays the foundation for impactful interventions and sustainable change. The trust given to us as social workers is immense. We are entrusted with the responsibility of advocating for those in need. By actively listening to their stories, respecting their perspectives, and validating their experiences, we not only gain valuable insights into their needs and strengths but also demonstrate our commitment to their well-being and dignity. Additionally, building relationships extends to macro-social work practices. Specifically, it includes nurturing collaborations with interdisciplinary teams, community organizations, and stakeholders. Embracing a collaborative approach enables social workers to leverage our diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives to address complex social issues comprehensively and effectively. This helps to maximize our impact and contribute to collective efforts towards social justice and equity.
