RUN FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T | MEET AARON PLEW

Meet Aaron Plew, one of our Chicago Marathon runners, who is running for a cause that hits close to home.

Aaron has a personal connection to the Brain Injury Recovery Foundation through one of its founders, whom he cared for as a patient following their accident. That connection has made his decision to run with Team BIRF especially meaningful.

This year, Aaron is combining his love of running with a cause that has had a lasting impact on his life. As he takes on 26.2 miles, he’ll be running in honor of someone whose story is closely connected to the mission he’s supporting.

Thank you, Aaron, for choosing to run for those who can’t and for helping carry the mission of the Brain Injury Recovery Foundation to the finish line.

Awareness isn't simply knowing what a brain injury is. It's understanding the people behind the statistics and recognizing the many ways brain injury can affect individuals, families, and communities.

The more we listen, learn, and share, the stronger our support systems can become.

RUN FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T | MEET TEAM BRAIN INJURY RECOVERY FOUNDATION

Our Chicago Marathon runners are gearing up to take on 26.2 miles with a purpose that goes beyond the finish line.

Each runner has their own story and reason for running, but they’re united by a shared goal: raising awareness and supporting individuals and families affected by brain injury.

Every mile represents the people they’re running for, the families navigating recovery, and the importance of having support along the way.

Help our Chicago Marathon team go the distance. Every donation makes a difference and helps support the Brain Injury Recovery Foundation’s mission.

And to our incredible runners, thank you for putting in the miles, sharing your stories, and running for those who can’t. We’re so grateful to have you representing the Brain Injury Recovery Foundation.

Did you know that not every spinal cord injury is caused by trauma?

While accidents and falls can cause spinal cord injuries, they can also result from conditions such as tumors, infections, vascular problems, inflammation, or other medical conditions.

Understanding that SCI can have different causes helps us recognize that every injury and recovery journey is unique.

This Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, help us spread awareness and build greater understanding of the experiences of those living with SCI.

RUN FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T | MEET ALEC

Meet Alec Lam, a member of Team Brain Injury Recovery Foundation who is taking on his race this year to support individuals and families affected by traumatic brain injury. For Alec, this cause is deeply personal after experiencing the loss of a close friend to a traumatic brain injury.

That experience gave Alec a firsthand understanding of how devastating brain injuries can be and how deeply they can affect not only the person injured, but also their family, friends, and entire support system.

Running has become an important part of Alec’s life, and now he is combining his passion for the sport with a cause that means so much to him. His goal is to raise $2,500 to help support the Brain Injury Recovery Foundation’s mission.

Every donation makes a difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing Alec’s fundraiser and helping spread awareness is another meaningful way to support his efforts.

We’ll be gathering this Thursday, September 17, from 5:30–6:30 PM at DEFY Tulsa for our monthly support group.

We’ll explore mindfulness, movement, and meditation as tools for wellness following brain injury. The evening will begin with a brief chair yoga practice, followed by an open conversation about practical ways to support stress management and overall well-being. No prior yoga or meditation experience is needed.

Our support group is open to brain injury survivors and caregivers. Come connect with others, share experiences, and find support in a welcoming, judgment-free space.

We hope to see you tomorrow!

After a brain injury, independence may take on a different meaning.

Support isn't about taking control away from someone. It's about helping individuals find strategies, resources, and confidence to participate in their lives in meaningful ways.

The brain is constantly working behind the scenes to help us move, think, react, and interact with the world around us. Even simple moments require multiple parts of the brain working together at once.

Learning more about how the brain functions helps build greater understanding of brain injury and recovery.
