Vatican Observatory Foundation Faith Inspiring Science since 1582.

The VOF is a non-profit organization supporting the scientific and educational endeavors of the Vatican Observatory, including the maintenance and modernization of the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT). The Vatican Observatory is one of the oldest active astronomical observatories in the world, with its roots going back to 1582 and the Gregorian reform of the calendar. The Vatican Observatory stands at the forefront of scientific research covering a broad range of topics, from an examination of the tiniest specks of interplanetary dust to the origin and structure of the universe. Headquartered at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, outside Rome, this official work of the Vatican City State supports a dozen priests and brothers (Jesuits and diocesan) from four continents who study the universe utilizing modern scientific methods. The Vatican Observatory works with the Vatican Observatory Foundation to promote education and public engagement in astronomy, and constructive dialogue in the area of faith and science.

Astronomers at the Vatican Observatory continue to explore one of humanity's oldest questions: Is there life on other planets? Christopher M. Graney, an adjunct scholar at the Vatican Observatory, discusses what scientists are searching for, why the Vatican invests in research and powerful telescopes, whether there is any evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth, and the reality behind claims that the Vatican is hiding evidence of extraterrestrial life or alien spacecraft. - EWTN Nightly News.

The 2027 Vatican Observatory astrophoto calendars are at the printer and will ship soon. Br. Guy highlights Dr. Brendan Thomson, who spearheaded the calendar initiative, which features donated images from world-class astrophotographers. Beyond serving as a fundraiser, the calendars are given to men in prison (supported by an annual Giving Tuesday campaign).

In this episode of the Mark Swartzberg Show, Brother Guy Consolmagno explores the theological mystery of how the Creator of the universe became part of His own creation through the Incarnation. He discusses his background in planetary science to highlight how studying the physical laws and origins of the cosmos reveals God’s ongoing presence and joy within creation.

In this episode of EWTN Live, host Father Mitch Pacwa interviews Brother Guy Consolmagno, SJ, an MIT-educated planetary scientist, Jesuit Brother, and Director Emeritus of the Vatican Observatory.

They discuss Br. Guy's book: A Jesuit's Guide to the Stars, highlighting the deep historical harmony between science and faith, dispelling the myth of an inherent conflict between the two by examining the pivotal role Catholic figures and religious orders played in key scientific advancements, such as the establishment of the Gregorian calendar, the classification of star spectra, the naming of lunar features, and the formulation of the Big Bang theory.

They further address how the narrative of a "war" between science and faith was historically driven by political motives and Victorian-era social agendas—such as eugenics—rather than genuine scientific opposition, concluding that scientific inquiry serves as a profound way to understand creation and know God more deeply.
