This is Linette, James Sanchez’s aunt, alongside members of his family.

During Gun Violence Awareness Month, we are sharing the voices of families whose lives have been forever changed by gun violence. Linette and their family spoke about what they miss most about James, the moments they cherished, and the space his absence has left in their lives.

Their reflections are filled with love, remembrance, and the deep impact of a loss that continues to shape their family every day.

Thank you, Linette and family, for honoring James and for sharing your memories with our community.

This is Melissa, James Sanchez’s mom.
During Gun Violence Awareness Month, we are sharing stories that reflect the lasting impact of gun violence on families and communities. Melissa graciously shared her experience and the love she continues to carry for her son, and the profound ways this loss has shaped her family’s life.
“He had a big heart, loved his family, and always showed up for everybody.”
Her words are a reminder that every life lost to gun violence is deeply cherished and that the ripple effects of loss are felt far beyond a single moment.
Thank you, Melissa, for sharing this video and for honoring James with such openness and love. We are grateful for your voice and your strength. 🧡

Gun Violence Awareness Month

Gun violence does not end when the sirens stop.
For families, that is when it begins.

Behind every statistic is a mother, a father, a child, a sibling, a friend whose life is forever changed. Survivors carry grief, trauma, anxiety, and the lasting weight of moments that cannot be undone. The impact reaches far beyond one day and ripples through entire communities.

According to Wear Orange, 130 people are affected by gun violence daily in the United States. In Arizona, data from the Center for Gun Violence Solutions shows that 77% of homicides in Arizona are due to gun violence, reminding us that this touches families right here at home.

Throughout June, we will be sharing survivor stories. Their voices matter. They deserve space to be heard. By listening, we may learn, grow, and better support one another.

We honor those lost.
We stand with survivors.
We stand with our community.

Join us for our June virtual support group! Our support groups aim to provide Survivors a place to share what’s weighing heavily on their minds and hearts. Through compassionate, trauma-informed responses, our Advocates ensure Survivors have a safe space to grieve, heal, and transform the community.💫

Our in-person support groups will take a short break in June and July as we make a conscious effort to reshape and improve the way we host and facilitate these gatherings. Our goal is to create a more supportive, engaging, and impactful experience for our community that truly reflects the needs, voices, and lived experiences of the survivors we serve.

Your voice is essential in this process. We are inviting survivors to share honest feedback about what has been helpful, what could be strengthened, and what you would like to see incorporated into future support groups. Whether you have ideas about format, topics, structure, accessibility, safety, or facilitation style, we want to hear from you.

We have created a brief survey to gather your suggestions and insights. Your responses will directly inform how we design and implement our updated support group model. All feedback will be handled with care and confidentiality.

Thank you for being part of this community and for helping us grow in ways that better support you. We look forward to sharing what’s ahead and reconnecting soon.

In observance of Memorial Day, our office will be closed on Monday as we pause to remember and honor the service members who gave their lives in military service.

We reflect with gratitude for their courage and sacrifice, and we hold space for the families, loved ones, and communities who carry that loss. May we honor their memory by showing compassion, strengthening our communities, and caring for one another.

We also recognize that this day can bring up grief or difficult emotions. If you need immediate support, NAMI Southern Arizona’s Crisis Lines are available 24/7 at (520) 622-6000 or 1 (866) 495-6735.

Wishing you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

We recently met with the Red Cross to explore opportunities for collaboration and to strengthen the support available to our community. During our visit, we were grateful for the opportunity to tour their community spaces and learn more about the resources they provide.

A sincere thank you to Monique Vallery for welcoming us and helping make this connection possible. We are grateful for her leadership, her dedication to service, and her ongoing support as a member of our board.

We look forward to building this partnership and continuing to work together in service of our community.
