Thank you UofA Poetry Center for your partnership!

We are so excited that our first concert series of the season, American Classics & Currents, will feature the world premiere of a work we commissioned of Jeffrey Derus, winner of the 2026 Stephen Paulus Emerging Composers Competition.

For this new work, Derus has set a text, selected by the UofA Poetry Center: Songs For The People by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. The 19th-century American poet, abolitionist and suffragist's powerful words continue to resonate today.

Here is an excerpt from Harper's text:

Let me make the songs for the people,
Songs for the old and young;
Songs to stir like a battle-cry
Wherever they are sung.

Our world, so worn and weary,
Needs music, pure and strong,
To hush the jangle and discords
Of sorrow, pain, and wrong.

Not for the clashing of sabres,
For carnage nor for strife;
But songs to thrill the hearts of men
With more abundant life.

Music to soothe all its sorrow,
Till war and crime shall cease;
And the hearts of men grown tender
Girdle the world with peace.

Join us for the world premiere, October 16-18!

Join us for the Best of the Best in the American Choral Tradition!

Ask choral enthusiasts for their top American composers and pieces of music, and THIS is the concert that comes to mind! Featuring numerous iconic works including Randall Thompson’s Alleluia, Eric Whitacre’s Water Night and Stephen Paulus’s Pilgrim's Hymn and more. These works, and many others from the 20th-century American canon, were championed by the pioneer of professional American choirs, the Dale Warland Singers. In that same spirit, we also present two new works by Timothy C. Takach and Jeffrey Derus.

MORE CRITICAL PRAISE FOR HERE I AM!

Here I Am: Choral Music of Jocelyn Hagen continues to make waves! True Concord's latest recording is prominently featured in the current issue of Fanfare Magazine, with two glowing reviews from critics and an interview with Hagen about the creation of her works.

A few selected quotes from the reviews:

"Accomplished, uplifting music, performed with distinction."

"Infinitely touching and yet completely aspirational, beautifully recorded and equally beautifully presented, this is a fabulous release. Jocelyn Hagen is a major voice, and she uses it toward the highest of ideals."

"The performance is pretty much faultless; the choir is one of the finest, and Holtan manages the whole, expertly."
