Children are victims of domestic violence, even when no one lays a hand on them.

Witnessing abuse, hearing threats, or living in constant fear can deeply affect a child’s sense of safety, emotional well-being, and development.

Children deserve to grow up in homes filled with love, safety, respect and not fear, intimidation, or violence.

Let’s remember: protecting survivors also means protecting the children who experience the impact of abuse.

Every child deserves safety. Every child deserves peace. Every child deserves a childhood free from violence.

After an abusive incident, an abuser may apologize, promise to change, and show affection, giving the survivor hope that things will be different.

But when the abuse happens again, the cycle continues.

An apology is not the same as accountability. Real change requires taking responsibility, respecting boundaries, and ending the abusive behavior.

At Karibu Community Legacy, we recognize that leaving an abusive relationship can be complicated, and breaking free is not always easy. Survivors deserve compassion, support, and safety not judgment.

Survivors, you deserve more than apologies followed by more abuse. You deserve safety, respect, and peace.

Survivors often hear this question as though leaving were simple and as though the responsibility for the abuse somehow belongs to them. The truth is, every survivor’s situation is different.

They may be navigating fear, financial barriers, housing concerns, isolation, children’s needs, threats, or the lasting effects of abuse and control.
But most importantly, the responsibility for the abuse belongs to the person who chooses to abuse not to the survivor.

Survivors deserve to make decisions about their own lives at their own pace and in ways that prioritize their safety and well-being.

Instead of asking, “Why didn’t you leave?”
Let’s ask, “What do you need, and how can I support you?”

Survivors don’t need judgment or pressure. They deserve to be believed, respected, supported, and reminded that they have the right to safety, dignity, and a life free from abuse.

Domestic violence is often misunderstood. Challenging these myths can help us recognize abuse, support survivors, and break the silence.

MYTH: “Domestic violence is only physical.”
FACT: Abuse can also be emotional, psychological, verbal, sexual, financial, social, digital, and involve stalking.

MYTH: “If it were really abusive, they would just leave.”
FACT: Leaving can be complicated and may involve safety concerns, financial dependence, children, immigration concerns, isolation, or fear of retaliation.

MYTH: “They must have done something to cause the abuse.”
FACT: No one causes or deserves abuse. Responsibility belongs to the person choosing abusive behavior.

MYTH: “They stayed, so it couldn’t have been that bad.”
FACT: Survivors may stay or return for many reasons. Staying does not make the abuse less real.

MYTH: “Domestic violence only happens to women.”
FACT: People of all genders can experience domestic violence, including men.

MYTH: “Abuse only happens in certain communities or families.”
FACT: Domestic violence can affect people across cultures, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and communities.

MYTH: “If they don’t want to report it, there is nothing we can do.”
FACT: You can listen, believe them, respect their choices, and help connect them with confidential support and resources.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

For many survivors, finding safety, healing, and stability takes time. Domestic violence can affect every part of a person’s life. Survivors deserve compassion, choice, and support without judgment.

At Karibu Community Legacy, we support and empower survivors of sexual and domestic violence, with a focus on immigrant and underserved communities. Through survivor-centered advocacy, supportive services, resource navigation, education, and community outreach, we help survivors connect with resources, understand their options, and make decisions that are right for them.

Our approach is culturally responsive and grounded in respect for each survivor’s experiences, values, language, and choices.

This month, we invite our community to listen without judgment, believe survivors, respect their decisions, and help connect them with safe, accessible, and culturally responsive support.

Healing looks different for every survivor. Our role is not to tell survivors what to do. It is to walk alongside them, honor their voices, and help create pathways to safety, healing, and hope.
