Last Friday, NJASLA and .nyc teamed up to host Advocacy Day: A Guided Tour of East Newark Riverfront Park! Designers, Gonzalo Cruz (AECOM, Principal) & Tristan Porto (AECOM, Sr. Associate), toured the group around the 5.6 acre riverfront park. This served as a continuation of their session at our 2026 Annual Meeting Conference – as they continued to analyze their nature-based strategies, resilient infrastructure, restoration work, and community programming! As part of Advocacy Day, we welcomed elected officials from all levels of government to not only inform them about their new public space, but also familiarize them on what we do as landscape architects and designers. We thank them for joining us!

We want to give a big thanks to Gonzalo, Tristan, the rest of the AECOM LAUD team, and the East Newark Riverfront Park staff! Huge thank you to and for sponsoring the event. We could not host events of this caliber without their support. Their site furnishing is featured all throughout the park so if you have any questions, definitely reach out to them! We also want to thank our community as well for their continued interest in these events. This event quickly filled to capacity within 2 days of its opening!

This past Friday, April 10th, NJASLA spent its afternoon at Halka Nursery! For this sold-out event, Halka Nursery owners, Kate Posten and Chet Halka took the group around their family-owned, 1200-acre Millstone, NJ property, showing the behind the scenes work of a premier tree grower of the country. The group was exposed to a variety of techniques that Halka utilizes, including pleaching and air potting. We were also familiarized with their inventory of over 200 species of trees. Attendees earned 2.5 LACES-HSW credits for this event.

We want to give a big thanks to Kate, Chet, and the rest of the Halka team for their hospitality, all our attendees for joining us, and a special thank you to Division 32 for not only sponsoring the event, but also their continued support of our organization!

We hope to see you at our next event, a Guided Tour of East Newark Riverfront Park on May 29, 2026, which will also be our Advocacy Day event where we invite local, State and Federal lawmakers to familiarize them with what we do as landscape architects. Registration will be opening soon.

Happy PLA Day 2026!

Each April, ASLA kicks off World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM) by celebrating the professional practice of landscape architecture on April 1—PLA Day!

Throughout WLAM, join NJASLA, ASLA, and colleagues around the world recognizing the profession’s impact on communities and the environment. The 2026 theme—Landscape Architecture in Action—highlights how ideas become places that support health, resilience, and daily life. From lively waterfronts to schoolyards and natural habitats, your work is making a difference every day.

Join us in showcasing that impact by using throughout April. On Instagram or LinkedIn, tag ASLA () for a chance to be featured nationally. Explore more ways to participate by visiting ASLA's WLAM 2026 Toolkit at https://www.asla.org/awards-events-main-landing/conferences-events/wlam2026.
