We're honored to have Katie Kniss join us at this year's Evening of Valor to share her story as a military spouse. We hope you are all getting amped up for the coming weekend! See you at the Gala!

Katie Kniss is the wife of US Marine Corporal and Grand Traverse County Lieutenant, Josh Kniss. In 2006, while Josh was deployed to Iraq, she and their children were in a devastating car accident that left her fighting for her life and pulled Josh from the front lines to return home and care for his family. From the battle front to the home front, Josh and Katie's story serves as a powerful reminder that coming home is only the beginning of the journey.
Her message emphasizes the courage it takes for mission transition and the weight of integration to civilian life. Katie will challenge us to look beyond the uniform, recognize the struggles that continue long after deployment, and build communities where veterans and their families can thrive.

The amount of effort that goes into this event doesn't even come close to the sacrifice that our service members make. Lieutenant Colonel Josh Traeger is a former Air Force Senior Trial Counsel who now builds his business around the people and institutions he once served. Commissioned in 2010, he served on active duty in Georgia, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, D.C., and the United Kingdom, prosecuting the military's most difficult criminal cases across the globe — work that earned him multiple Meritorious Service Medals. He continues to serve as a Reservist, teaching law and leadership at the Air Force Judge Advocate General's School at Maxwell Air Force Base. Following his active duty career, Lt Col Traeger relocated with his family to Northern Michigan, where he founded True North Legal Group in Traverse City, offering community-centered legal services with a focus on small business and nonprofit development, and The Military Defense Firm, through which he and his team provide dedicated representation to service members worldwide in courts-martial, separation boards, and other disciplinary matters. He is a devoted husband and father of two, an active participant in local community initiatives, and an avid mountain biker and skier. His career reflects a sustained commitment to service, integrity, and family.
