Hello friends,

We are making a last push to gather the ingredients for our Thanksgiving bags for local veterans. Please consider our Amazon shopping list which will be delivered direct to our facility, but you are welcome to find better deals and drop items off at 435 N Singleton Ave, Titusville, FL (Mon-Sat, 10 AM-2 PM)

We are interested in everything in our shopping list with particular focus on traditional Thanksgiving items: Green bean casserole ingredients, yams/sweet potatoes, stuffing, gravy, corn, cranberry sauce, mashed potato packages, and non-perishable dessert ingredients.

Our daily veteran pantry is also short shelf-life milk, cans spaghetti, ravioli, spam, fruit cans and toothpaste...

If you need assistance with a travel claim, recommend you stop in the travel office at your VA hospital or clinic.

The Lake Nona VA Medical Center has a Virtual Health Resource Center (Room 1E402E on the first floor)
that can help with http://ID.me accounts and VA app access. The Lake Baldwin VA clinic, also in Orlando can assist as well.

Veteran's often ask why 10% + 20% + 50% doesn't not equal a 80% VA rating. The answer is VA math. The VA has a rating calculator but so does the DAV. Some argue the latter may be better because it can calculate the "bi-lateral" factor as well as dependency stacking.

Instead of adding percentages together (like 50% + 30% = 80%), the VA uses a "whole-person" concept.

A Quick Example (50% + 30%)

• Start with 100% health.
• Condition 1 (50%): 100% − 50% = 50% remaining.
• Condition 2 (30%): 30% of the remaining 50% = 15% disabled.
• Total: 50% + 15% = 65%.
• Rounded: 65% rounds up to 70%.
Because of this diminishing-returns system, each new condition adds a smaller slice to your total rating.

EDIT: This is specific to the Gulf War and subsequent post-9/11 locations. I have another summary for Far East Asia which I will re-post at another time although it is here in response to one of the comments.

While Congress passed the Pact Act in 2022, the VA updates the list of covered presumptive illnesses and eligible service locations as new data emerges (with notable periodic additions occurring in subsequent years like 2024 and 2025 for specific cancers and toxic exposure locations).

If you were previously denied a Pact Act "presumptive" condition or location, bring the date of the decision letter denying your claim to DAV Chapter 109 at 435 N Singleton Ave, Titusville, FL and we will help you file for free. If you never filed, come see us, bring your diagnosis and proof of your deployment (DD214, other proof) and we will assist.

If you no longer have the VA decision letter, call 1-800-827-1000, go through to claims and ask them to mail it to you or you can download and print from your VA Benefits app.
