These are just some of the requests coming through our Client Emergency Fund that we’ve HAD TO DENY.

Small amounts, yet real stakes and impacts for the people we represent and their cases when left unanswered due to our funding that has now run out.

The CEF is one of the most powerful tools we have at The Bronx Defenders. It helps us cover food, transportation, clothing, housing support, replacement documents, and other essentials that keep people from being pulled deeper into the legal system. It also buys our lawyers and advocates the time we need to keep fighting for what matters most: stable housing, family reunification, immigration relief, and other longer-term solutions.

In the last few weeks, we’ve had to turn people away.

At The Bronx Defenders, we represent some of the many New Yorkers who have experienced the real consequences of collusion between the NYPD and DOC with ICE. Under existing NYC law, it is extremely difficult to hold the city accountable when its agencies violate our sanctuary laws. We must strengthen protections, otherwise New Yorkers will remain at risk of separation from their families without accountability.

The NYC Trust Act would create accountability by giving New Yorkers the right to sue city agencies if they believe their rights were violated.

This week in Albany, we demanded an end to the systemic abuses that harm New Yorkers every day.

Alongside impacted people, advocates, elected officials and other organizations, we lobbied for sentencing reform with the Community Not Cages Coalition, called on the Legislature to pass New York For All and Dignity Not Detention to safeguard New Yorkers from Trump’s mass deportation agenda, and demanded an end to non-consensual drug testing of pregnant people and newborns in our state through The Maternal Heath and Dignity Act.

If passed, these bills would transform lives by keeping people harmful systems in the first place.

Yesterday we celebrated Admin Professionals Day with amazing vibes, food, heartfelt letters, and tie-dye🎉🎨

Our administrative staff are the backbone of The Bronx Defenders, welcoming people into our space, supporting cases, helping with translation, keeping our systems running, and holding together countless moving parts behind the scenes. Their work is often unseen, but always essential and is public defense. We are deeply grateful to our administrative staff every single day!

The Bronx Defenders stands with Mano Raju who was held in contempt and fined for refusing to accept additional felony cases. Let’s be clear: Taking on more wouldn’t be representation. It would be a constitutional violation dressed up as compliance. 

When a judge gets to dictate public defenders’ caseloads and punish them for pushing back, the Sixth Amendment right to counsel becomes a formality.  

The right to counsel must mean something for public defenders everywhere. Tell your elected officials: fully fund public defense. Read the community call to action link in bio.

The Bronx Defenders is suing New York City’s Department of Correction for unlawfully denying a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request investigating systemic violations of incarcerated people’s constitutional right to counsel at Rikers Island.

It is illegal for your landlord to evict or harass you for demanding the right to a safe, decent home.

On Wednesday night, we hosted a “Fix It or Fight It” workshop for Bronx tenants on reporting housing issues, demanding repairs, and protecting the right to safe housing. Our housing organizer and attorney, William and Andre, covered everything from filing repair complaints to collective rent strikes and taking your case to court.

This was just our first Housing Know Your Rights series. Please join us at our next session—date dropping soon 👀!
